Running With the Ball (RWB) - Variable Practise (TGfU)

Equipment: Cones, Balls & Bibs.

Cones: Square 20 x 25 with 5 x 5 coned areas in the corners.

5 players with a ball, 3 defenders with bibs in the middle of the grid.

The aim of the activity is for the players in Blue to run with the ball into the Safe Zones on the outside of the grid. Once a player is in the safe zone, they cannot be tackled. Allow to play for 2/3 minutes between questions and rotate the 3 bibbed players after every question:

Question 1 - How do we RWB?

Question 2 - When do we RWB?

Questions 3 - How often have players ran diagonally across the grid? Why?

Question 4 - Where would we RWB most of the time in a match?

Running With the Ball (RWB) - Variable Practise (TGfU) Progression

Equipment: Cones, Balls & Bibs.

Cones: Square 20 x 25

This is progression simply removes the outside safe zones from the grid. This is a simple 5 vs 3 overload. Teams score by running with ball over the oppositions line. Once they have achieved this, they maintain possession of the ball and then attack the opposite line.

Players are encouraged to run with the ball when they see space infront of them (As previously mentioned in the first activity).

Rotate players as fit.

Screen 4 (10 mins)

Running With the Ball (RWB) - SSG

Equipment: Cones, Balls & Bibs.

Cones: Square 20 x 25 (with a 5 yard wide channel down each touch line).

Players will by now have discovered that the most common place they are able to run with the ball is in wide areas.

4 vs 4 plus GK's.

Condition: If the attacking team receives the ball inside the wide area, the only way the opposing team can tackle that wide player is to run through the gates to chase them.

Players to be questioned: Why is it important to run with the ball at speed?
