1v1 Possession - Group Possession

Organization:

30 x 30 circle (size depending on numbers)

To Start: Each player with a pinnie ("pinnie tail")

Progress: Each Blue or Yellow with a ball

Instructions:

1. Warm-up into activity with Capture the Flag "Tag". First without the ball. Then start to incorporate it by allowing the players to hold it in one hand, and finish with the following:

2. Attackers (blues) must attempt to maintain possession of their own ball for as long as possible.

3. The defending players (yellow) must attempt to dispossess all the attacking players.

4. If the attacker loses their ball they must work with a team-mate to help maintain possession.

5. The game is over if the defending team wins all of the balls or after a set time limit given by the coach.

6. Switch the defending and attacking team at regular intervals.

Coaching Points:

1. Vision - Keep your head up. (1) Be aware of space and pressure (2) Check your shoulder to see if there's space behind.

2. Change in speed and direction

3. Body shape - Keep a low center of gravity to (1) shield the other players from stealing your pinnie/ball. Body in between ball and the defender. (2) quick explosions away from pressure

4. Body positioning - where is the pinnie (/ball) in relation to pressure

5. Depending on where pressure is, can I use a move to get away?

6. If double teamed by defenders look to prepare your next action quickly.

Progressions:

(P1) - No pass backs. Players are not allowed to pass the ball back to the player that passed them the ball, this encourages players to hold the ball and pass out in a new direction.

(R1) - The coach can play balls back inside the area to provide a second opportunity for attackers to possess the ball.

4. (P1) Shadow defenders are live, if Red touches the ball that is a point taken away from the Bellow player.

5. (P2) Yellow receiving player decides to either pass or dribble the ball, depending on red pressure.

Coaching Points:

1. Body Shape - Side body shape; Using arms to feel the defender; Low center of gravity (knees bent; expand body area)

2. Approach - Creating space: movement away from the ball; Checking in: movement towards the ball; Awareness: Can we take the ball on our front/back foot depending on pressure; Ball furthest from defender, body in between.

3. Surface technique - Sole of the foot, using the foot furthest from the opposing player; Rolling with the inside or outside of the foot based on pressure.

4. Awareness - Timing and quality of pass; Timing of movement away/toward ball; Creating space; Decision making once full pressure is added (front or back foot)

5. Execution of move - Ability to hold off opposing player; Placing the ball on the furthest foot from the defender; Finding space to turn or recognizing when to use support.

Progressions:

(P1) - Shadow players, defenders, are live.

(P2) - Blue receiving player decides to either pass or dribble the ball, depending on red pressure.
