Set up & oragnisation

Back four (Red) with a GK v two advanced CM's and a NO 9. Server is in black and play starts from him every time.

Playing area is half pitch, which has 3 goals on the half way line, marked out with poles.

Server will play into the GK who should then look to play into his CB's or FB's who's aim is to score either through running the ball through either side goal or play the ball through the middle goal and into the server. The idea of having to run the ball through the side goals is so that when my FB recieves the ball in a match his first thought is can i take my first touch forward? Can i advance with the ball before passing? Having the goal on the halfway line should then get them to think when i am past the halfway line i should then be looking to either pass and create a 2 v 1 or pass and then hold their position. The reason for goal in the middle of the pitch is so that my CB's and FB's are looking to play into what would be my DM (screen) on a match day.

The blues can score in the main goal but only have 10 seconds once in possession of the ball. The countdown will ne managed by me.

Coaching & managing

Coaching:

To start the session off i would allow one phase of play to take place before stepping in just so the players get use to the area, system, session, other players and the ball. The only coaching i will do with the reds is mainly questions which will get them problem solving and create a debate among the players with what would be best and also if any technical points need picking up then i will use the coaching process to go through their mistake. The first question to the reds is if the NO 9 splits the CB's who are playing narrow then what other position could we take up on the pitch which would aloow our GK to play either of you? Once the CB's solve the problem and look to play wider my next question to the reds would be if the CB's are playing on the corner of the 18-yard box where do you think the FB's most affective position would be on the pitch? Can we play with our heels on the touchline and be in between the CB's and the half way line?

Managing:

For it to be a successful guided discovery session my main focus will have to be managing the blue team constantly so it continously provides new challanges and problems for the reds. Before the session starts i will tell the blue NO 9 as soon as the server plays the ball into the GK to go and the press the CB's by running centrally towards the penatly spot and in line with both CB's which will then give a problem to the CB's as they can not recieve the ball without both playing wider. Now the two blue CM's will naturally go and close the FB's straight away so im predicting most of the reds success for the first few minutes will be by playing through the central goal to the server so after 2 or 3 times of this happening i will step in and manage the blues so that if the ball goes into one of the FB's the nearest CM will press and the other will screen the central goal. This should then allow the reds to have more success with their FB's and should get them thinking where they need to be on the pitch so that they can possibly score a goal but at the same time be able to cover for a counter attack.

Changes:

If the players start to find the session easy and solved the problems i had set them i would then introduce another blue striker which i would set the blues up to play two advanced CM's and two strikers. I would then put a red DM in too who would act as a screener.

This now poses new problems for the reds as both CB's will marked and pressed in possession. They will now probably look the play the screener and then play out from him.

To further challenge the players again i could possibly remove the central goal.
