One on one in a circle (30 mins)

One on one in a circle

•The group is spread out into a big circle (likely use 2 circles with bigger groups) with 4 or 5 balls around the circle with the players.

•2 players are in the middle, 1 is given the attacker role and the other is the defender.

•They work for 1 minute against each other and then 2 new players go in.

•The attacker is to go to a ball, ask for it and try to turn the defender. They are not permitted to pass the ball to a player next to the player whom they received the ball from. Each time they can pass to any other player they receive a point, each time the defender wins the ball they receive a point.

•Once everyone has had a turn the players go in again for a second time as the other role of the game.

Coaching points

Proper check offs to create space, shoulder checks when receiving the ball, using your body to protect the ball and feel if you can turn or roll the defender, positive first touch, communication to get the ball and when passing to a teamate. also feel free to work the defensive side of this drill with talking about the angle you approach the attacker, how close you should be, use your body when appropriate etc.

Jodar Drill (30 mins)

Jodar Drill

Put half your team next to you in between 2 cones 4 yards apart (distance doesn`t really matter, just a starting point)

Put half the team on cones that are placed from the goal lin and arcing up towards the other group of players.

Each player matches up with an opponent and the coach passes a 50é50 ball in for the players to play. The attacker is supposed to score, the defender must work on his angle of approach and defend.

Once they have gone, the strikers goes to the back of the line and the defender moves up a cone (if they are at the top then they go to the end line cone, if they are 2nd in line then they move to the top.

Then the next pairing goes. The key is to keep the order with their pairings, not have the person at the top go each time. You want each pairing to deal with each other with a new allignment to mess with how the defender approaches and how the attacker deals with this new defensive shape.

Coaching points

Attacker should look to use the defenders momentum coming in at an angle against him and try some fake takes or steps or circle takes to his advantage

Attacker needs to think about his shielding position

Attacker should look at not over dribbling, keep it simple if possible

Defender has to think about what his position means to his approach (if he is next to the attacker and is faster or stronger, go in hard and quick, if he`s not then think about taking an angle). If he is coming from the goal line then he can close quick and then jockey and push to a weak foot, slow down the attacker, don`t dive in.

Quick strike finishing around the box (30 mins)

Practice organisation

• Practice area 30yds in length, full width of pitch, incorporating

penalty area with goal, as illustrated.

• 12 players (incl. GK), working in 3 groups of

3 Attackers plus 2 Servers.

• Supply of balls with A’s & with S’s.

• Practice starts with: A1 touches ball past cone to shoot from

distance in central area.

• A1 then assists A2 with a wall-pass for A2 to shoot

at goal from an angle.

• After assisting A2: A1 overlaps S1 cone to

receive a pass from S on corner of penalty area, to supply A2 & A3,

moving into scoring positions from outside area.

Detail

• Employ power & placement skills when striking on goal.

• Observe position & movement of GK before deciding technique to

strike at goal.

• Concentrate on excellent technique: body position/shape,

footwork, arriving into position/timing

of movement.

• Clean contact on ball with a chosen part of body or foot surface.

• Movements & interchanges of A’s should co-ordinate to cover

major goal-scoring areas within penalty area.

• Simple progression for this practice is:

- Position D on edge of penalty area to defend cross from A1 &

block shots from A2.

Key coaching points

• Strike with power & accuracy from a distance.

• Keep ball low when striking at goal.

• Deliver crosses accurately, avoiding GK’s intercepting range.

• Early decision on selection of technique to use, striking at goal.

• Contact ball with precision & excellent technique.
