1 v 1 - 1st defender(pressure) (10 mins)

Organization:

-The activity takes place in a 20 x 15 area as shown.

-Coach passes to player A, Player A takes a positive touch, passes to player b and pressures, Player b attacks the goal.

-If Player A wins the ball and passes to the coach the Blue receive 2 points and if the defender DELAYS for 10 seconds they receive 1 point. If Player B scores they receive 2 points. After 4 minutes rotate the defenders to attack and vice versa

-White and Blue should defend 1time each for 5 minutes. Total = 10 minutes

Coaching Points:

-Speed of approach and angle... quickly to close down and steer player right or left towards the sideline

-EYE on ball- Observe players first touch as you travel to close down..if its good ---slow down jockey and contain

-Be patient but threaten the ball and to win it.

-Dispossess to possess- proactive defending

Organization:

-The activity takes place in in a 20 x 17 area. If you do not have a portable net use coaching poles if possible for your net.

-The coach passes to a blue defender, the defender receives and passes to any of the white attacking players. The 2 white attacking players look to attack the net while the blue seek to defend.

-If the White score they receive 3 points. If the defenders Delay for 10 seconds they receive 1 point and if they win possession and dribble though one of the blue counter goals they receive 2 points.

-The White a and Blues players will each defend for 4 minute intervals x 2. Total=16 minutes

Coaching Points:

pressure, support/cover, balance (15 mins)

Organization:

-Organize the group into 3 groups of 3 or 4, as this can be done with 4s as well, depending on size.

-Grid size can vary depending where you are training; remember, the smaller the area the more it caters to your defending session, I usually make the area on the end 7x15yds and the middle area 4x15 yds, but you have to adjust to your players.

-the focus is for the 3 defending players to work together, stay compact and focus on pressure, support/cover, and balance.

-try to force the attackers to play around the 3 defenders, not between them; "don't get split"

-attackers can only play the ball on the ground.

-you can add flank players to help move the ball.

-have each colour serve as defenders 5 minutes. Total 15 minutes.

Possible Progression:

-take out the cones and play 6v3 and make the objective for the attackers the same, try to split, and the defenders gain points by intercepting the ball and attempting to maintain possessions and pass to the coach.

Coaching Points:

All defending principles of play:

-

- Pressure/Delay, Support/cover, balance.
