Starting Line Up

We will be playing in a simple 1-4-2-3-1 formation throughout the tournament as it gives us defensive stability and allows us to be strong centrally which is a key focus for us this weekend!

Primary differences from yesterday:

1. #6 & #8 both playing a little more conservative and a little flatter! 3 out of 4 goals were conceded from the central area above our penalty box.

2. Entire team defend a little deeper...effectively forming a 1-4-5-1 in defensive phases of play.

3. More diagonal runs from the #9

4. NOTICE HOW OUR TACTICAL TARGET ZONES HAVE CHANGED (CENTRALLY IN FRONT OF 18YD BOX, SIDELINE AREAS OUT WIDE)

**************************************************************************

Saturday we worked hard with little result

***************************************************************************

DEFENSIVE UNIT

(#1, #2, #3, #4, #5) (ANDY, JACOB, JONATHAN, MADDEN, KYLE, THOMAS, LUKE)

 3 KEY PRIORITIES

1.COMPACTNESS IN THE CENTRAL AREAS (ESP. 16-25YDS FROM OUR GOAL)

2. DEFEND WITH PATIENCE IN 1 V 1 SITUATIONS!

3. TRACK VERTICAL RUNNERS!!

I expect to hear us aggressively communicating as a team. I want to hear:

"push/press, slide, recover, no turn, force right/left" etc

*1 v 1 individual defensive battles are key....YOU MUST WIN THOSE by being patient, focused on POSITION FIRST, ball second.

*STAY COMPACT and connected as individual players to form a strong unit

*When the ball goes negative, push higher up the field!!

*Pass off players as they move horizontally across the field....but TRACK VERTICAL RUNNERS!!

*DEFENDING THE CENTRAL AREAS AGGRESSIVELY AND ENSURING WE KNOW WHERE WE ARE IN RELATION TO OUR CENTRAL GOAL AT ALL TIMES (HEAD ON A SWIVEL)

* Do not allow any balls through the back line centrally....make everything go wide!

 ***************************************************

MIDFIELD UNIT

(#6, #8, #10) (JACOB, GRAHAM, LUKE, ERIC, MADDEN, JUSTIN, THOMAS, PATRICK, MADDEN, KYLE)

3 PRIORITIES:

1. BE A TRUE SHIELD FOR OUR DEFENSIVE BACK LINE - DENY ALL PENETRATION CENTRALLY

2. TIRELESS WORK AND AGGRESSION

3. TRUE WIDTH IN ATTACKING PHASES (SIDELINES)

#6 & #8 MUST MAKE IT A PRIORITY TO SHIELD OUR BACK LINE. NOTHING COMES THROUGH THE CENTRAL AREAS. NO SHOTS FROM THE TOP OF OUR 18YD BOX!!

*DO NOT GIVE THE BALL AWAY CHEAPLY - IT'S PRECIOUS

Stay connected with our defensive unit and forward lines (transition well)

* Win the battle for the middle of the field. Every individual battle must be a FIGHT!!

RELEASE THE BALL EARLIER TO WIDE PLAYERS/ SUPPORTING PLAYERS OR TO OUR #9

*HOW WELL CAN WE MAINTAIN OUR TEAM SHAPE IN CONNECTION TO OUR DEFENSIVE LINE/ATTACKING LINE

**************************************************

ATTACKING UNIT

(#7, #9, #10, #11) (MARTIN, MADDEN, TOLU, ERIC, JUSTIN, HUNTER)

3 PRIORITIES:

1. IT'S ALL ABOUT QUALITY FINISHING! (HIT THE TARGET!!!)

2. EARLY RUNS (VARY VERTICAL AND DIAGONAL RUNS TO GET BEHIND DEFENSIVE LINES)

3. POSSESSION/SUPPORT PLAY

* Ensure that our #9 plays as high as possible to take advantage of opportunities in behind their back line! Keep defenders honest!

THE QUALITY OF OUR FINISHING DETERMINES THE RESULT:

The surface we use - inside, outside, toe, laces, how we shape the shot - curl high, shape in corners low, drive ball hard and low, across the GK to far post.

HOW COMPOSED WILL WE BE WHEN WE GET IN FRONT OF GOAL?

*DO NOT DRIBBLE THE BALL INTO DEAD CORNERS IN NUMBERS DOWN SITUATIONS. Pull the ball back out and look for support.

*HOW WELL DO WE MAKE EARLY RUNS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF BALLS PLAYED OUT OF TIGHT SPACES (EITHER FROM SWITCH OR LONGER BALL)

*If we get opportunity to attack over the top we take it, otherwise #9 MUST hold up the ball to allow support players to join.
