Ball mastery warm-up

Organization:

1. Open area.

2. Every player with a ball.


Instructions:

1. Coach demonstrates various pick-up skills (e.g. fish, scoop, roll flick).

2. Following pick-ups, players perform juggling challenge.

a) Bounce, juggle, catch x10,

b) Bounce, juggle, catch, bounce, juggle, bounce, juggle, catch (add one bounce-juggle after each turn)

3. After 3-5 minutes, players dribble in open area.


Coaching Points:

1. Head up.

2. Soft, controlled touches.

3. Use of both feet.

4. Light on toes.


Progressions:

1. Ensure players keep track of their scores. Encourage players to set and break records.

Dribbling Warm-Up

Organization:

1. Red square - 8x8yds.

2. Blue square - 40x40yds.

3. Every player with a ball.


Instructions:

1. Players dribble inside big square looking to avoid small square.

2. Introduce Messi and Ronaldo dribbling.

3. When coach calls a color (blue or red) players have to dribble into that area.

4. Competition - do not be the last to get into the square.

5. End with knockout game.


Coaching Points:

1. Head up to observe space.

2. Tight space/small area - dribble like Messi.

3. Lots of space/big area - dribble like Ronaldo.

4. Messi - pinky toe, one touch per step, close control.

5. Ronaldo - instep, one touch every 2-3 steps, bigger touch into space.

6. Look up every time ball is played out of feet.


Progressions:

1. Knockout game - players dribble in blue square and look to kick each other's ball out of the area.

2. If a player is knocked out, he can get back in by performing skill(s) inside the red square.

3) If a player is knocked out, he becomes a defender.

Technical Non/Semi-Opposed

Organization:

1. Players distributed evenly at corners as shown.

2. Every player with a ball.

3. Red square - 8x8yds.

4. Blue square - 40x40yds.


Instructions:

1. First player from each white team runs through square upon making eye contact.

2. As soon as they are out of the square, the first players from blue group do the same.

3. Process repeats for set time (2-3 minutes).

4. Players must perform inside-outside at red cone before running through square.


Coaching Points:

1. Connection with teammate - eye contact.

2. Weight and direction of first touch - positive (into space).

3. Speed of approach - slow down as you get close to target.

4. Technical execution of inside-outside.

5. Timing of inside-outside.

6. Accelerate away.


Progressions:

1. Work on both sides (right and left).

2. Competition - place balls on top of cones. Teams lose a point if they knock ball down.

Fully Opposed - 1v1

Organization:

1. 40x40 area with 8x8 red square in center.

2. Players distributed evenly as shown.

3. Attackers (shown in white) with balls.

4. Mini goals set up at ends as shown.


Instructions:

1. Attacker starts with the ball.

2. Defender is live on attacker's first touch.

3. Attacker looks to score on either of two goals.

4. Attacker gets a point if he goes through the red square.

5. Defender is not allowed to leave red square once inside it.

6. If defender wins the ball, he looks to run across attacker's line.

7. Players return to same lines. Rotate every 2-3 minutes.


Coaching Points:

1. Positive first touch - take space quickly.

2. Head up to assess pressure.

3. Drive at defender at speed.

4. Selection of move, fake, or feint.

5. Timing and execution of selected technique.

6. Accelerate away to lose defender - Ronaldo.


Progressions:

1. Defender starts in red square.

2. Defender is allowed to enter and exit red square freely.

4. Positive mentality - get forward.

5. Recognition of 1v1 situations - attack.
