Warm up (15 mins)

Organization:

- 10 x 10 grid

- 1 ball per group

Instructions:

- players will be spread apart by at least 8 yards

- one player will pass the ball to the attacking player

- once ball is passed the defending player will work on the proper defensive technique and shadow the player back to where he first passed the ball

Coaching Points:

1. Close down quickly

2. Slow down as you approach the attacker (speed of aproach)

4. Anticipate what the attacker is going to do

5. Defend in an angle

6. Push to direct the offensive player to use their weak foot or to an area of choice

Progressions:

- Go to full pressure

- Add a goal

Screen 2 (15 mins)

Organization:

-12 x 12 area

- 4 corner goal areas

Instructions:

- Player B passes the ball to player A

- Player A dribbles the ball and tries to score in the zone

- Player B wi and C will try to steal the ball and counter on to the other goals

Coaching Points:

1. Close down quickly

2. Slow down as you approach the attacker (speed of aproach)

3. Anticipate what the attacker is going to do

4. Defend in an angle

5. Push to direct the offensive player to use their weak foot or to an area of choice

6. Encourage communication in the back line.

7 . Intensity to defend.

8. Ensure coverage is correct.

9. Ensure balance is correct.

6v4 (20 mins)

Organization:

6 Blue defending players (2 CBs, RFB, LFB, 2 CMs)

4 Red attacking players (1 striker, 1 Defensive mid, 2 wingers)

1 goalkeepers (yellow)

Instructions:

2 teams compete. The blue team attempts to defend (win the ball back or deny a good opportunity to score), retain possession and score in the small gate goals if possible. The Red team attempt to score on goal.

Coaching Points:

- Work on shifting as a unit

- Ask for good communication

- Players need to identify who needs to pressure the ball first, give cover and give balance

- Sliding as a unit to the strong side of the field (the side with the ball in it).

- The back 4 steps up when the ball is played negatively (backwards).

- The back 4 drops when they anticipate a ball being played long over the top.

Instructions:
