Passing circle (20 mins)

Session content:

Player initiates by passing the ball to teammate nearest to him, who in turn lays off the ball and back pedals to create space. Player who made the initial pass then looks to pass the ball to the player directly after the player next to him. The player who laid off the ball now moves up to get the lay off. Continue to repeat action in circle – then change direction.

4v4 facing the goal (30 mins)

Organization

Players divided into groups 14 + 1 Gk. Group the players according to their technical and/or physical ability.

Playing area should be between 40-45 meters long by 40meters wide.

Before beginning the game the goalkeeper must take his/her positioning in the goal, 6 players must be assigned as defenders, and will be divided into groups of 3 to work together. At the same time, the 8 remaining players will be divided into groups of 4 to play together and attack.

4 players position themselves directly opposite to the goalkeeper as per picture above, with two players in the middle and two players on both sides roughly 10 meters apart from central players (Player A, B, C and D). The three defenders, Players E, F and G start inside the penalty area close together roughly by the penalty spot.

Position the remainder of the attackers just outside of the grid, directly behind the first attackers.

Position the remainder of the defenders just outside of the grid, next to the goal.

The goalkeeper will initiate the exercise by distributing the ball to the four attackers positioned on the opposite side of the grid, by either throwing, kicking from hands or ground – can alternate by having the defender distribute the ball.

Once the goalkeeper throws/strikes the ball, the defenders move up to put pressure on the attackers.

Whichever attacker receives the ball, must pass it with his/her first or second touch to his/her teammate. The objective of the attackers is to score a goal through a combination, creating a 2v1 situation or by dribbling and shooting on a 1v1 situation.

The aim of the defenders is to regain possession of the ball or deny a scoring opportunity by delaying the opponent, cutting down angles and force play to one direction, looking to create a 1v1 situation or even a 2v1 situation with the goalkeeper and when in possession of the ball look to score in the two small goals.

If the defender kicks the ball out of bounds play is over and new group moves in; if the goalkeeper catches the ball, the play is over and new group moves in.

When the attackers score a goal, play is over and new group moves in, when the attackers miss the goal and the ball goes out of bounds, play is over and new group moves in.

Progression

Rotate the players after every action.

Every 7 minutes, switch defenders into attackers and vice-versa. Repeat cycle twice for every group.

In order to progress exercise receiving player can take on defender off his first touch, rather than having to pass the ball.

Attacking

Key coaching points for player in possession (1st attacker) are:

• When to shoot.

• When to pass.

• When to dribble.

Key coaching points for the closest supporting player (2nd attacker) are:

• Supporting angle and distance to ball.

• Support position behind ball.

• Support position in advance of the ball.

• Support position lateral to ball.

• Combination play (1-2, double pass, overlap, take over).

Key coaching points for unbalancing attacker (3rd attacker) are:

• Unbalancing the defence.

• Create space for others.

• Attack space behind defence.

• Possession changing – transition.

Defending

Key coaching points for 1v1 are:

• Closing down – pressuring opponent.

• Recovery runs – goal side positioning.

• Angle and speed of approach.

• Body shape, balance, and foot positioning.

• Control and restraint.

• Delay and channel.

• Deny turn.

• Timing and decision to tackle.

Key coaching points for 2v2 are:

• Angle and distance of cover.

• Intercept pass – deny turn – deny penetration.

• Tracking – recovery runs.

• Changing role of pressure and cover.

• Visual and verbal communication – recogniz

9v9 zonal game (20 mins)

Organization

Players divided into two teams of 8 including GKs. It is important to divide teams according to their technical and/or physical ability.

Playing area should be between 50 - 60 meters long by 40 - 45 meters wide.

Before beginning the game the goalkeeper must take his/her positioning in the goal, 4 players from each team will position themselves in their respective defensive zone, while 3 players will place him/herself in the attacking zone, as illustrated in the picture above.

The goalkeeper will initiate the exercise by distributing the ball to his/her teammates positioned inside the defensive grid, whose objective is to penetrate into the attacking zone, or if not possible, maintain possession of the ball until they can find an opportunity to penetrate.

The players without the ball, when on defence, can only defend inside their assigned zone.

The only player who is allowed to move into another zone is the one who passes the ball into it. He/she should penetrate directly after connecting the pass with a teammate, looking to create a numbers up situation, or at least an even number situation when attacking.

The objective of the attackers is to score a goal by shooting or by penetrating into the attacking grid and through a combination, 2v1 situation or by dribbling and shooting on a 1v1 situation.

The aim of the defenders is to regain possession of the ball or deny a scoring opportunity by delaying the opponent, cutting down angles and force play to one direction, looking to create a 1v1 situation or a numbers up situation.

When the attackers score a goal, they look to receive another ball from their goalkeeper and progress to attacking once again. Once a player loses the ball, he/she must move as fast as possible into their assigned zone.

When the defenders regains possession, they transition into offense with the objectives described above.

- Goalkeeper can distribute ball into attacking zone

- Only player who can penetrate is a player who has not passed the ball (3rd man penetration/combination)

- After penetrating, player can defend in attacking grid if possession is lost (transition to defend – pressing)
