1v1 Defending Technical Warm-up (10 mins)

1v1 Defending with Technical Warm-up.

1) A passes ball to B. B dribbles and attempts to score in small goal. C closes down quickly and forces wide. After play is over, C has to perform dyanmic side shuffles through the long poles.

Rotation: A > B > C > A

2) Same as #1. But now C adds a block to the side shuffle

3) Same as #1 but now C goes through backwards through the long poles.

* Have other grid exactly the same but mirroring so players work on defending different angles.

Coaching points: Close down quickly, low stance and and round your run. What happens if you run straight at attacker? (goal is wide open)

*Teach what goal side means!

Defenders need to be tenacious

Defending: Back Four (10 mins)

Defending Back Three:

- On coaches command react to cone and have good P-C-B

- Progression

1. react to 3 cones and go back to start.

2. Now coaches can play ball through seams, make sure you don't let him!

Coaching Points: 1) individual defensive stance, 2) communication: force right or force left; I go ball, I got cover, etc. 3) Quick transition

Defending the dribble or the long ball

- If there's no pressure on the ball and you see the player put his head to hit the long ball, what do we do? (Yell side on and starting running back side on)

- if the player is dribbling with no pressure, the three backs do not break shape but keep dropping at the speed of dribbler.

Transition Game (15 mins)

Transition Game to Goals:

Set-up: Coach has group of balls. There are two teams directly on opposite side.

Coach calls a 2 digit number. 52 or 64. The first number is for the black team and second number is for the blue team. When the number is called for those respective players run arround cone that is placed or small goal.

Players have to set themselves up on the fly and figure out best shape to have when playing the game.

Spacing will be very important in this game.

-If ball goes out, coach can choose to play another ball in for same group

II. Short Corner from near post runner (one hand up)

i. if they send two out then player who is next to server runs inside the box to draw two defenders out.

i. Person who receives short along endline plays it back at an angle. That person has option to cross ball, dribble, or pass to top of 18 where B comes from far to check to shot.

ii. Person who receives ball from short can turn with it and penetrate. If so need to have 45 angled ball runner.
