Passing exercise (10 mins)

What?

Today I am looking to improve your ability to receive the ball with a positive first touch.

When?

When there is space

When I can dribble

Why?

So I can create more opportunities to score goals.

Set Up

Create a field 25x35 metres as shown.

How to play

Players are free to pass to any other player in the area.

Player receiving is looking to take a positive first touch into space.

Progressions

1) Passing player to add passive pressure to player he/she has passed to.

2) Passing player attempts to win the ball if opponents 1st touch allows - if not, pressure is over.

3) Passing player tries to win the ball off receiving player within two touches

4) Player receiving may play a 1-2 with another free player (must be one touch).

Defender must allow player to continue as normal once they have completed their task.

Skill acquisition 1 (15 mins)

Set Up

Players start in pairs and need one 12x8 area per pair. Player A starts with a ball at his feet.

How to Play

Play begins with player B making an angled run to receive a pass from player A. Player B receives and drives back over the line where he started. Now swap roles so player B is passing to player A.

Prgressions

1) Player A will now pressure as soon as Player B has touched the ball.

2) Player A can now pressure as soon as he/she passes the ball.

3) Player B can now attack either end depending on where defender comes from.

4) Player A serves the ball (use hands if needed) so that Player B has to use different surfaces. For example serve the ball for thigh/chest/head/foot.

5) Add a defender (see diagram C).

- defender (player C) can either pressure or not pressure. If no pressure, then player B looks to turn and dribble over line. If player C pressures, player A and B team up to dribble over the end line where player C started.

Coaching Points

- check shoulder as you move in to receive so you know it's safe to turn

- open body so you can see the ball and where you want to go

- push ball towards where you want to go using your back foot

- use body to cut across defenders path to get away

- use feints to disguise where you want to go

Skill acquisition 2 (20 mins)

Set Up

Create a field 25x35 metres as shown with balls around the outside.

How to Play

Two teams play 3v3 - 5v5 possession in the area with 2 neutral players at either end. To score, the team in possession must complete 5 passes to score 1 point. First to 5 points wins.

Progressions

1) Can't go back to same neutral player.

3) Limit passes so encourage attacking, forward and quick play.

2) Must take at least 2 touches

Player Tasks

Can you get in a position where you can turn to face forward?

Can you get in a position where you can support your team mate?

Can you take a positive first touch?

Skill Acquisition 3 (20 mins)

Set Up

Create a field 25x40 metres with two mini goals at either end.

How to Play

• Group A & B line up to pair up for 1 vs. 1

• For the first activity the players of team A (blues) are the attackers.

• The first attacker demands a pass by coach from opposite side (the coach must

take a touch first before passing)

• Player A receives and takes a positive touch whilst being under pressure from the

opponent

• Scoring options:

- dribbling into an outer zone = 1 point

- dribbling and scoring in a goal (must be in scoring zone) = 2 points

- dribbling across the line behind (full turn) = 3 points

Normal football rules apply except no corners and kick in's instead of throw in's.

Teams score by scoring into one of the two goals they are attacking.
