Warm up (10 mins)

Organization:

1. 30 x 25 yard area set up as shown

2. 12 Players (8 attackers,4 defenders) set up as shown

3. 8 balls (1 per attacker) (Additional around the outside)

Instructions:

1. Four attackers start at the top and bottom of the area

2. All attacking players set off at the same time and attempt to switch sides

3. Defending players must attempt to prevent attacking players from crossing the middle zone

4. Defending players are only allowed to tackle attacking players inside this area

5. For every ball won the defending team scores a point

6. Rotate defending and attacking players every third attempt

7. Record which defending team scored the most points

Coaching Points:

1. Correct tackling technique (block or poke tackle)

2. Ankle locked

3. Body weight forward to gain possession

Progression/Regression:

1. P – Remove the middle zone and allow players to tackle any where inside the area

2. R – Only allow one side to go each time (4 players rather than 8 players)

Main Theme 1 (15 mins)

Organization:

1. 20 x 10 yard area set up as shown

2. 12 players (8 Attackers, 4 Defenders) set up as show

3. Gates define starting positions

4. 1 ball per attacker (Additional around the outside)

Instructions:

1. There are two attacking lanes 20 x 10 yards

2. Attacking players attempt to dribble the ball past the two defenders in their attacking lane

3. Each defender has a 10 x 10 yard space to defend. Defenders are not allowed to tackle outside of this area

4. Attacking players rotate to the next line after each attempt

5. Rotate defenders at set intervals

Coaching Points:

1. Correct tackling technique (block or poke tackle)

2. Ankle locked

3. Body weight forw ard to gain possession

Progression/Regression:

1. P – Increase the size of the area to 30 x 15 yards

2. R – Allow defenders to recover into second area to tackle and create 1 vs.2

Main Theme 2 (15 mins)

Organization:

1. 30 x15 yard area set up as shown

2. 12 players (4 Defenders, 8 Attackers) set up as shown

3. 6 balls (Additional around the outside)

Instructions:

1. Defending players are each assigned their own 15 x 15 yard area to defend

2. Attacking players go one at a time and attempt to beat the defenders and score in the goal

3. After each attempt the attacking player moves to the opposite area for their next attempt

4. If the defending player wins the ball they must pass this outside the area

5. Rotate players after a set time interval

Coaching Points:

1. Close down quickly

2. Angle of approach to make play predictable

3. Slow down as you approach the attacker

4. Bend the knees, stay sideways onto the ball

5. Correct moments to tackle

6. Techniques of tackling

Progression/Regression:

1. P – Increase the size of each defender’s area to 20 x 20 yard area

2. R – Take away restriction zones and allow defenders the opportunity to play 2 vs. 1

Conditioned Game (15 mins)

Organization:

1. 35 x 60 yard area set up as shown

2. 12 players set up as shown

3. 1 ball (Additional around the outside)

Instructions:

1. Players play 2 v 2 in each of the three zones

2. Players can only operate within their assigned zone

3. Normal restart rules apply

Coaching Points:

1. Close down quickly

2. Angle of approach to make play predictable

3. Slow down as you approach the attacker

4. Bend the knees, stay sideways onto the ball

5. Correct moments to tackle

6. Techniques of tackling
