Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Touch Step Dribbling Runway
Save Image: Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Touch Step Dribbling Runway

Touch Step Dribbling Runway (15 mins)

Setup:

After we divide 3 groups. Each group will have 3 sets of cones divided between 3 or 4 players. Runway is anywhere from 10-13 yards long and the cones are 1;2 yard apart (just enough room to fit ball through).

How It Works:

Players touch step dribble through runway, trying not to hit any of the cones. Players are to touch ball each step and not let the ball roll.

Drill Sequence:

A. Practice Moves- Favourite then Opposite Foot

B. Relay races where each player goes twice (player tags teammate before next player can go). First team sitting down wins. Do relay race for one foot at a time.

Progression (All groups):

Remove runway cones and position one cone at end. (Top of picture). Players will have touch step relay race. Right foot/left foot.

Players will practice then do relay race (players go twice each); they will alternate turns. If players just kick ball (not touch every step then they have to start again).

BE VERY TOUGH ON THEM, MAKE THEM DO IT OVER. WE ARE AIMING FOR PERFECTION!!!!!!

Key Points:

1.Run off your toes for dribbling foot (the supporting leg can mildly have heel touch the ground)

2.Use your touch step (pinky toe area) for outside foot.

3.Support leg doesn’t catch up to dribbling leg. (Touches are too small then)

4.Ball is more in the middle of your body.

5.Shoulders straight on, not turned sideways.

6. Knees are bent, upper body is bent.

Dribbling Side to Side - Protecting ball (15 mins)

Set up:

Cones are 10-12 yards apart. 2 players per set with 1 ball.

How it Works:

Player with ball will do moves with defender shadowing him. Defender is passive. Each round is 30-40 seconds. Other player works. Perform each move at least for 2 rounds.

For the Blue Groups or If appropriate: Defenders will hold a red/yellow cone. Dribblers have to call out cone colour as they are performing moves to ensure attackers watch the ball and defender.

Players will perform following moves:

a. Touch step switch (Player dribbles to one side with far foot then as approaches cone pulls ball under with toes underneath body and other foot touches it out sideways)

b. Quick Turn (pull ball with toes, turn opposite way- similar to a cruyff)

c. Outside Cut-Take with Inside (Player dribbles to one side with far foot then as approaches cone cuts it with same foot then takes it with inside of other foot which shields from defender)

d. Outside Cut-Fake take touch inside (Player dribbles to one side with far foot then as approaches cone cuts it with same foot then fake take steps with that same foot while dropping shoulder and takes with inside of foot to original destination)

Progression 1: 35s rounds, 1 v 1 players trying to beat player to cones. Defender is not allowed to touch ball and point is not scored if defender gets foot inline with cone before attacker stops ball with cone.

Progression 2: Same as Progression 1 but everytime attacker exposes ball (i.e. doesn't dribble with far foot then defender can kick ball). Defender must stay on their side but can kick ball when it is too close.

Keys:

1. Change of pace

2. Dribble with far foot to protect ball

3. Keep eye on ball and defender

4. No more than 2 moves at a time, acclearate by 2nd move then adjust as needed

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Keeping Possession in Tight Areas

Keeping Possession in Tight Areas (15 mins)

Set up:

Grid is 15-20 X 20-25. 3 v 3 + 1 or 2 N OR

4 v 4 + 1 or 2 N

Balls are around grid so game is continuous. 2 grids for each team.

How it Works:

Players are trying to keep possession in grid, connecting 5-7 passes (depending on level) is 1 goal. Each player is matched up with an opposing player and ONLY that player can tackle them. The neutral player(s) can be attacked by any defending player when they have the ball.

If teams are struggling then can more introduce neutral players on the side.

The object of the game is to have players dribble with their far foot when pressured and protect the ball.

Progression 1: Move to a large game (combine groups), with 2 neutrals on each side and teams are trying to dribble over line. If a player loses possession when they could have used their far foot then they do 3 push-ups during game before they can play again.

Keys:

1. 1st touch into space

2. Dribble with far foot

3. Use fakes in covered direction to open up more space.

4. Change of direction

Passer Keys:

1. Play to far foot, a spot only teammate can get the ball.

2. Play before teammate gets to the space.

Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): SSG in Tight Areas

SSG in Tight Areas (30 mins)

Set up:

Grid is 15-20 X 20-25. 3 v 3 + 1 or 2 N OR

4 v 4 + 1 or 2 N

Balls can sit with coach so they can get back into play quickly.

How it Works:

From the previous possession game, we introduce goals 10 yards away from the grid. There are now 2 teams with 3 v 3 in the same grid (or 4 v 4). Blue is attacking one way and red the other way.

There are support players on each end by the goal.

When a team is in possession, the blue support player from their own goal comes in to make it a 4 v 3. The blue team has to connect 3 passes (more or less, based on coaches direction) before they can play into the target player. The target player lays off to an attacker making a run into the scoring zone to finish.

Finishing restrictions can apply if scoring is too easy (one touch finish). Defenders cannot follow attackers into shooting zone.

If team loses ball then support player goes back to their spot and opposite teammate support player comes in.

Rotating support players at coaches discretion (every few minutes, after a goal is scored, etc...)

Progression 1: Allow for defenders to track into the shooting zone.

Keys (General: Width, Mobility, Improvisation, Penetration, Support):

1. 1st touch into space

2. Dribble with far foot

3. Use fakes in covered direction to open up more space.

4. Change of direction

Passer Keys:

1. Play to far foot, a spot only teammate can get the ball.

2. Play before teammate gets to the space.
