Warm up

Organization:

1.20 x 20 yard area set up as shown

2.12 players set up as shown

3.1 ball per player

Instructions:

1.All players dribble around the area

2.On coach’s call “switch”, players stop their ball from moving, and start dribbling with a new ball (see A)

3.One ball is removed every 30 seconds, leaving one more player without a ball each time

4.Players without a ball must try to steal one from another player

5.If a ball is stolen, that player must steal one from a different person

6.Play for set time period

Coaching Points:

1.Change of speed and direction

2.Head up, accelerate away

Progressions:

1.P – Coach can restrict the surfaces players may use to control the ball, e.g. inside only, outside only, soles only

P – Players can steal the ball back from the person who stole it from them, immediately

R – Add in more balls than players

Warm Up II (15 mins)

Organization:

40x30 yard area

Divide area into 4 x 10 yard channels

Each player has a ball

Instructions:

- Players work in groups of 3

- One player at a time dribbles through the channel using skill move to beat cone (red)

- Set off the next player upon reaching the end

- Introduce Messi & Ronaldo dribbles techniques

Coaching Points:

- Head up between touches

- Travel as quickly as you can, keeping the ball under control

- Messi touches every step using pinky toe, keeping the ball close

- Ronaldo touches out in front of body, taking bigger strides between touches

- When is it appropriate to Ronaldo & Messi dribble?

Main Theme

Organization:

Instructions:

1.The activity starts with first attacker dribbling at the defender who is passive

2.The attacker then plays to the player opposite and closes them down

3.The defender once beat joins the opposite line

4.The process is repeated

Main Theme

Organization:

1.25 x 15 yard area set up as shown

2.10 players (2 teams of 5) set up as shown

3.10 balls

Instructions:

1.The activity starts with one teams player dribbling and attempting to knock over their opponents cone

2.As soon as the attacker takes a shot at the cone, the opponent can attacker the next player on the opposite side cone

3.After attacking a cone, players can chase the next opponent to stop them scoring

4.The attackers score a point every time a cone is knocked down

5.Cones can’t be defended by the players and they must stand behind them

6.Restart the game after every player has gone

Coaching Points:

1.Control of the ball

2.Attack at speed

3.Move technique being used

4.Transition

Progressions:

P – Allow the attacker to drop off more before defending the next attacker. This will force a 1v1 more than a chase

R – Play without the chasing defender

Conditioned Game

Organization:

40x30 yard area

Divide area into two 30x20 yard fields

4 teams of 3

Instructions:

- Work same activity on both fields

A

- Players partner up with someone from opposite team

- 3 sets of pairs play 1v1 at the same time

- If ball goes out or goal is scored, restart with pass from defender

- Play for set period then have players play against new partner

Coaching Points:

- Use 1st touch to engage defender

- Use other players as decoys

- Head up to recognize if there is space behind to exploit

- Use appropriate dribbling technique for low/high pressure

- Attempt moves covered in session

- Experiment with new moves

Progressions:

B

- Players continue to play against partner

- Only 1 soccer ball

- Players can only steal from their partner
