Set Up

Organisation:

Half Pitch plus 20 yards Long.

Full Width/Narrowed by 5 yards either side.

Opposition Team (Blues) GK-4-3-1.

Attacking Team (Being Coached - Reds) GK-2-4-1-1.

.

Rules:

Ball Starts with Red GK majority of the line as Red team are attacking and are being coached.

Reds try to work the ball up the pitch and score against the Blue GK. No Time Limit.

Blues try to win the ball back and get a shot off within 6 seconds.

.

Ask the Reds to try and play the furthest pass forward FIRST if possible - ideally straight into the 9 or 10.

Affecting the 4 + 5

Affecting the 4 + 5:

When the Red GK has the ball, can we ask the 4 and 5 to split wide to give two options to the GK. This also gives the opposition forward a big problem.

We will normally ask the GK to roll the ball into either CB (4/5)

Affecting the 6 + 8

Affecting the 6 + 8:

Whichever CB receives the ball, the furthest Midfielder, in the above scenario it is the 6, drops to give an option for a diagonal pass across the pitch.

The closest Midfielder, in the above scenario the 8, moves slightly widerand maybe slightly deeper also to offer a shorter and straighter passing option.

.

If the opposition CM's mark them tightly, then they will have created a big space in front of the oppositions defence for the 9 and 10 to hopefully exploit.

If the Opposition CM's do not mark them tightly, then one of them will be on to receive a pass on the half-turn and look to play forwards.

.

The 6 or 8 can also be used to "bounce" to ball in a triangle shape across to the opposite CB if no forward pass is available. E.G. ball from the 5 into the 6, who plays a first time pass to the 4/two touches

Affecting the 7 + 11

Affecting the 7 and 11:

Whichever side the GK plays the ball, the opposite winger will be asked to stay as wide as possible to stretch the pitch and hopefully drag the opposition wider apart.

.

The nearest winger will be asked to use some movement to create himself some space to receive the ball.

This movement will either be "Go-to-Show" or "Show-to-Go"

The scenario above is "Go-to-Show". This means the winger has made a movement away from the ball (Go) and then sharply doubled back to throw off his marker and create some space to receive the ball. (Show-to-Go would be the opposite, coming short then spinning for the ball over the top/slid in behind). This movement requires a trigger. The trigger will be the second before the CB receives the ball.

.

If the winger can either receive the ball to feet and drive at his man looking to get a cross in, or receive the ball in behind looking to get a cross in, then the opposite winger must be looking to get into the box to get on the end of the cross.

.

Alternatively, the winger may receive the ball to feet and look inside to link up with the 9 or 10.

Affecting the 10

Affecting the 10:

If the Opposition CM's follow our CM's into deeper positions, then there will be a space created for the 10 to try and exploit. Whichever CB receives the ball, the 10 needs to give an option for a diagonal forward pass by dropping into the space created as shown in the above scenario.

.

The 10 should look to receive the ball on the Half-Turn and his first thought should be to drive towards to oppositions goal. The player then requires movement from the wingers (staying wide to receive to feet or making diagonal runs for passes) and from the 9 (making a diagonal run across the defence).

.

The 10 has the option of a pass or a shot.

Affecting the 9

Affecting the 9:

Whichever CB receives the ball, the 9 is looking to get across to that side of the pitch and be an option for a straight pass through the lines into feet/floated into chest.

.

The are either looking to Pin the opposition CB and receive the ball higher up the pitch

or

They are looking to come a little shorter in the hope of dragging the CB out of position to leave space in behind for the winger/10 to run into for a longer pass from the CB.

.

Whichever option the 9 goes for, they need to 10 and nearest midfielder to spin around the corner from their markers and be an option for a lay-off. Also, maybe even the winger coming inside off the line.

.

Ideally the 9 stays high and aims to pin the CB to try and stretch the pitch as much as possible.

Filling the Box

Filling the Box:

If a winger is about to cross the ball into the opposition penalty area, then the Attacking team need to try and get 3 players into the box and one on the edge.

.

In the above scenario, the opposition winger gets himself into the far side of the box, the 9 and 10 makes opposite runs, the the 8 is getting on the edge of the box for a cut-back or a poor clearance.

.

The number 6 can move slightly to balance off the pitch.
