Finishing From A Cross (15 mins)

SetUp

Penalty area, set up as shown.

Crossers in wide channels, attackers and GK

Organization

Attacking players starts with the ball played to crossers feet.

Attacking players attack the box to try to finish the cross.

Progressions

1) Early Cross. Attackers cross and to time their runs beyond the defenders.

2) Cutback Cross. Attacker 1 plays to crosser A, receives the ball back and switches deep to crosser 2. Attacker 1 makes a run to the near post to draw the 'defender' out of the space, Attacker 2 makes late run into the area. Crosser 2 cuts ball back for Attacker 2 to finish.

3) Reverse Cross. Left and right footed crossers switch channels. Crossers cut back on to stronger foot for a chipped/curled cross over the top. Attackers try to time their runs beyond the defenders.

- Add a defender(s)

Coaching Points

Timing of runs and movement into the box

Timing and angle of runs off each other - cross over, attack front & back post, not in same line

Quality cross into the box - early, low & hard, bend, behind defenders, away from GK

For reverse cross, lots of bend - finesse, height to beat the defenders

Organization

Progressions

1) Ball must visit the wide channel before a goal can be scored - provide ideas for wingers, encourage speed of play, coach striker movement

2) Free play

Coaching Points

Timing of runs and movement into the box

Timing and angle of runs off each other - cross over, attack front & back post, not in same line
