DEALING WITH CROSSES AND HIGH BALLS

ORGANISATION

Practice is set up with x4 Cones, x2 Red (A) and x2 Blue (B)

The servers based on cone A serve the ball to the front post/middle of goal and cone B serves to the back post. ALL SERVES ARE FROM THE HANDS

GK starting position is middle of the goal then a slight movement of feet depending on where the ball is coming from. GK starts by taking x2 serves off both cone A. Then takes x2 serves off cone B.

GK's ROTATE AFTER FULL SET

GK's will then take a serve off cone A and then off cone B and alternate sides afterwards.

GK's ROTATE AFTER FULL SET

KEY COACHING POINTS

- Focus on the ball with an open body position / stance, On toes, Hands in good position

- Assess the flight of the ball / Make a decision early to stay or go / Adopt the '2 second rule'

- Load and clear shout of 'Keepers'

- Use appropriate technique when attacking the ball, Is the right knee being used as protection? Drive up through the back of the ball using the 'W' technique, Attack the ball at its highest point or above the crossbar.

- Does GK need to go to ground after making the catch? If not can the ball be released quickly for a counter attack?

PROGRESSION

Session has now progressed to more realistic situations with the servers now striking the ball into the box from out wide using their feet and mixing up the type of delivery to make the GK make a decision on if he/she can come and attempt to take the cross.

KEY COACHING POINTS

- Make sure the servers understand the importance of good delivery in order for the GK's to benefit from the session.

- Ask servers to mix up serves, Drill the ball into the box with laces, Loft the ball in with quite a bit of height on it, Inswing / Outswing ETC

- Ideally the ball should land in the shaded area of the penalty box

- Use cones / markers to help servers with accuracy if needs be

SMALL SIDED GAME

ORGANISATION

Half pitch practice, x2 full sized goals, Coned off from edge of 18 yard box to halfway line on both sides of the pitch incorporating the 'Dead Zone'. 4v4 plus 1 player in each dead zone (5) and a GK (6)

One player from each side can only play in the dead zone at one time, opposition players cannot go in the dead zone at any time during the drill.

GK starts game off, Players must try and complete 3 / 4 passes and transfer the ball to the dead zone as quick as they can, Once ball has been transferred the player that is operating in the dead zone can get ball under control and either attack the space and get a cross into the box or he / she can deliver first time, Varying the service as they see fit, GK makes decision about weather or not to come and attack the ball in a crowded area or stay at home. x20 minute game, opposition players swap over 'Dead Zone' sides so they deliver from both sides during the drill.
