Sequence Passing vs. Passive Defenders (25 mins)

Set up:

20 x 20 grid. 5-6 players are passing and there are 2 passive defenders. The passive defenders need to keep a 5 yard distance between them (like a defensive line).

How It Works:

Players are numbered. In the 1st sequence, 1 passes to 2, 2 to 3 etc...

Each time player receives, they are looking to receive between the gap. Players need to understand that passing sequence is like passing forward in a game.

Rotate defenders after each sequence (or before if you want every player to do it).

Sequence 1:

After receiving they turn and dribble away. The player with ball then turns back towards defenders. The next player to receive needs to time their run so they are between defenders as the dribbler is ready to pass.

Sequence 2:

1 plays between defenders to 2, 1 continues their run and receives it back (like a give and go), then 1 plays into 3 who is making a forward run from other side of defenders as shown in right of picture. Player 3 will dribble off and then come back with next sequence using 4 and 5.

Sequence 3:

1 plays into 2 who lays off to 3 on side of defender, then 3 plays 4 through. On left of picture.

Keys:

1. Timing of run to receive

2. Fing the gap between defenders (want to be equal distance between defenders in relation to ball and behind defenders so they'd have to turn to follow ball)

3. Continue run after pass

4. Quick thinking, adjustment

5. Passing/Receiving Keys

Possession Game (25 mins)

Set Up:

25-30 x 15 grid (adjust to your group). 4 v 4 in the middle with 1 side support on each side. For more advanced groups, can play 4 v 4 or 5 v 5 with 2 neutrals.

How it Works:

Each team is trying to score by connecting a set amount of passes (e.g. 6 connected passes is a goal). Neutral players pass to same team they receive it from.

Teams can use their side support who have 2 touches with their own designated support areas. If neutrals are on inside then they play like normal players.

Progression 1:

Teams must connect a certain amount of inside passes before using neutral players (if side support) OR Reduce touches for teams playing with central neutrals

Progression 2:

Progression 1 + Add cone check (calling out yellow or red cone being held up by coach before receiving ball)

Keys (General: Depth, Width, Improvisation, Mobility, Penetration):

1. Find the gaps between defenders for passes

2. Movement after playing side support (to get open again).

3. Shoulder check before receiving

4. Continuing forward runs as ball is being played.

5. Maintain balance when going forward

Movement Keys:

1. Change of pace to receive ball/find gaps to receive

2. Change of direction to get away from defender (Player shouldn't actually try to fake but rather change direction otherwise their fakes are too slow and obvious)

3. Watch ball and defender/read defender's reactions which decides

4. Support players need to remember to play far foot.

Possession Game With Finishing Focus (25 mins)

Set Up:

20-25 x 15 grid (adjust to your group). 4 v 4 in the middle with 1 side support on each side. For more advanced groups, can play 4 v 4 or 5 v 5 with 2 neutrals. The field length shortens but the width remains the same.

How it Works:

Each team is trying to score by connecting a set amount of passes (e.g. 4 connected passes is a goal). Neutral players pass to same team they receive it from. After they complete a certain amount of passes then they are looking to play a player through on goal; that player turns and looks to finish quickly (game speed).

The opposing team starts with possession after shot.

Teams can use their side support who have 2 touches with their own designated support areas. If neutrals are on inside then they play like normal players.

Progression:

After teams complete their set number of passes they are allowed to have an additional support player go in finshing zone and the defending team can have 1 player track back (to make it a 2 v 1).
