Warm Up (20 mins)

2 x 30yd x 20yd areas:

In groups of 4, have players back pedal (jockey) from one end to the other (next four go when those in front pass halfway cones) to the other. Teach; weight on balls of feet, head up, eyes on ball, arms out, how to change jockeying angle (face other way) and finally how to 'spook'.

Adv, Partner up. Have attack run at defender (50% to start), changing direction, to work on jockeying ability. Reverse roles on the way back.

Adv 2, Have attackers run with more purpose (75%) and at one point burst to the side of defender. Teach defender to ENGAGE by getting their arm across the attackers run to hold them off.

Coaching Points

1) How fluent is the defenders movement?

2) Can they read the attackers intension? Are they too close/far from attacker?

3) How agressive/willing are they to engage the attacker? Do they grab or foul attacker?

Activity One (15 mins)

2 x 20yd x 10yd Triangles: 1 v 1 play

Player at the base of the triangle play the ball to the player at the tip of the triangle and defend. Teach; i) make attacker uncomfortable by pressing high (past mid-triangle line), ii) engage body contact and force out of triangle, iii) IF you win the ball counter to tip of triangle, don't just kick it out. Change positions after each play.

Coaching Points

1) If opponent takes you on; accept the challenge, "Angle Shut Down," get body across opponent (between them & the ball) and win possession.

2) NEVER show attacker your number!

3) Don't be afraid of physical contact

If ball goes out sidelines, coach restarts, if ball goes out endline, attacking team now become defending team (immediate transistion), defending team goes OFF and NEW 4-players come on with a ball.

Coaching Points
