Technial Warmup (20 mins)

Setup:

Penalty box split into 2 (setup for 2 games)

2 teams

4 GK

Activity:

#1)

Team handball - goalkeepers are the neutral targets. Teams score by getting the ball to one of the goalkeepers and getting it back successfully. Dropped ball is a turnover. Player with the ball may not run with the ball.

-Dynamic stretching -

#2)

Ball on the ground - possession in half the grid. Goalkeeper(s) are neutral targets. Teams score by connecting to goalkeeper in opposite half of the field and following to maintain possession there. Point only counts once the goalkeeper distributes out to the same team and maintains possession with the distribution. Passes to the goalkeeper in the same half require the goalkeeper to play with feet (backpass rule).

Progression:

+ service must be in the air to the opposite side goalkeeper to score.

2v2 Cross from Wide (15 mins)

Setup:

Field as shown

2 teams (defenders vs attackers)

Activity:

Goalkeeper and 2 defenders defending the goal against 2 attacking central players + 2 wide players (server / far post runner). Flanks are free for service into box, but attacking team must combine to get a player into the flank. Defending group scores by clearing the ball to high, wide targets.

Coaching Points:

Goalkeeper's role as a covering defender - must read and direct pressure. Every ball movement requires a new decision ("Keeper" or "Away"). When the goalkeeper comes out to catch a cross, a defender MUST drop to cover behind the goalkeeper (pressure and cover). Early decisions by the goalkeeper - if in doubt, call "AWAY", hold your line and prepare to make the save. Know where targets are before the cross is served. Vision of dangerous spaces in front of goal tells you where you will need to go to cut out cross. If call is "AWAY", immediately get squared up and prepared to set on target player (ready to become the pressuring player / shot stopper). Get defenders facing forward, not facing ball (must see defender's number not shoulder). "Right/Left shoulder" to get defenders to open and see runners far post.

3v3 Cross from wide (15 mins)

Setup:

Same as previous but adding a 3rd defender and a 4th attacker.

Activity:

GK organizes backs to press ball side back to wide channel and compact weak side back to track in dangerous space in front of goal. Attacking team can send 1 player into wide channel in combination. Defending team scores by playing ball to high, wide targets.

Coaching Points:

Pressure / cover on initial combination play into channel then immediate recovery. Near post runner is most dangerous, central runner is next, far post runner next, etc. Defenders must identify and track most dangerous runs. Goalkeeper must be aware of targets to anticipate where cross is likely to be played.

7v7 with wide channels (30 mins)

Intervals:

3 min work + 1 min rest x 6 = 24 min

Setup:

Field setup as shown.

3 teams of 6 (2 play, 1 rests)

Activity:

7v7 to 2 goals

10 y wide channels.

Wide channels are free (no defending) once team has combined to get a player in (2 touch limit in channel if speed of play is not high). Goal from central shot = 1 point. Goals from crosses = 3 points. Make point value higher for goals from flank play if players are not creating chances wide.

Regular soccer rules apply including goal kicks and corner kicks.

Coaching Points:

GK must be aware of shape of team going forward to be able to organize defensive shape in transition. If a wide player has gotten forward, weak side player must play behind the ball going forward and be prepared to transition to defend. Organize to defend most dangerous targets first. Track vertical runners, hand off horizontal runs until runners are inside the box and / or the serve is imminent (player with the ball has no pressure and is preparing to serve), then, all runs must be tracked. Defenders must track on the goal-side AND ball-side shoulder of the runner. Goalkeeper starting position must be on the ball line, open to the field (back to goal), balanced and ready for drop step to back post in the event of a long serve.

GK's 3 goal priority:

1. Defend the goal. 2. Defend the line between the near post and the top of the 6 yard box (may be smaller for younger / smaller goalkeepers). 3. Defend the space inside 6 yard box (nothing drops head hight or below between the posts and the top of the 6.
