Part 1

The course is made up of six pairs of parallel cones, approximately 6 yards apart. Two players start at

the same time from the first pair of cones, jog along the inside of the cones and do the various exercises on the way. After the last cone, they run back along the outside. On the way back, speed

can be increased progressively as players warm up.

1. Jog through 5 times

2. Hip out (groin movement) - 2 sets

3. Hip in (groin movement) - 2 sets

4. Circle partner - 2 sets

5. Jumping with shoulder contact - 2 sets

6. Quick forward and backwards sprints - 2 sets

Handball (20 mins)

Set Up:

Goals are 36-40 yards apart. One goal will be made of cones or corner flags. Width is roughly 15 yards. Players in middle play in 25 x 15 yard grid.

How it works:

Hand passing, 7 v 7 + 2 goalies. Team connects 4-5 passes and then can score. The ball must before the line for a shot to score.

Game restarts with goalkeeper. Play 4-6 minute halves then switch sides so both teams get opportunity to finish on real goal.

Progression 1: Can score right away.

Progression 2: Introduce cone check before receiving. Players call out cone colour coach is holding before receiving.

Progression 3: Must move after making pass for team to keep possession.

Keys:

1. Quick ball movement to penetrate defense.

2. Spatial Awareness

3. Mobility

Turning Skill and Spacial Awareness (25 mins)

Setup:

In groups of 4, 2 players are in middle and 2 players are on ends with a ball each. Players on end are about 20 yards apart.

How It Works:

Players from middle receive from server and complete a turn then play to other side. Players on inside will then go back and receive the ball from same server again, completing the same turn. Players on inside will always receive from one side, then pass to the other. In picture above, you can see top middle player has already done his turn and ready to making final pass, while 2nd middle player is about to perform his turn.

Make it a competition after each practice round (how many can be done in 45 seconds).

Turns:

A. Inside Turn (pulling ball with inside of toes) and players should pass it with same foot they received with. When the player finishes the turn, it should make a L shape (from where pass came from to the end point of the turn).

B. Midfield Turn (using the same inside toe part as an inside turn), the player now receives with for e.g. left foot and turns over their right shoulder. It is very important that players make sure their first step after touching the ball is in the direction they are turning. Some players will turn the ball but still be facing the original direction which would have them lose the ball in a game situation.

C. Receive Back to Goal and then step out/drop shoulder to the side the ball is on and then turn wide with inside of foot of faking leg (if ball is on left side of attacker then defender will already be on that side of the player)

Keys:

1. Change of pace to receive ball

2. Believe in your skill (if a player is unsure whether their turn will work then they generally leave the ball exposed).

3. Turn with the ball, reduce as much separation as possible.

Progression 1:

After practicing each turn. Servers now have a red and yellow cone (one cone per hand) and hold up a colour when players in the middle approach them. Players in middle check shoulder right before pass is made to them and call out colour.

Keys:

1. Check shoulder as the server is about to hit the ball

2. Same as above.

Possession End Line Game (30 mins)

Set Up:

25-30 x 15 grid (adjust to your group). 6 v 6 + 2 Neutrals in the middle with 2 side support on each side. If players have difficulty then 5add an additional neutral can be used to make the game successful.

How it Works:

Each team is trying to score by stopping the ball on the line. Teams are trying to score on the same goal throughout (i.e. they DO not change direction).

Teams can use their side support who have 2 touches with their own designated support areas.

3-4 Minute Games then rotate.

Progression 1:

When using a side support player within 15 yards, the same player must get the ball back from the support player before continuing on (i.e. they will need to use turns practiced). If switching ball from sideline of one side to the other then player doesn't have to receive ball back.

Progression 2:

Using Progression 1, add cone check (calling out yellow or red cone being held up by coach)

Final Progression:

Introduce goals and lengthen grid.

Keys (General: Depth, Width, Improvisation, Mobility/Support, Penetration):

1. Play forward when possible.

2. Movement after playing side support (to get open again).

3. Shoulder check before receiving

4. Continuing forward runs as ball is being played.

5. Maintain balance when going forward
