Warm up- Pass and Pressure (10 mins)

Organization: 1 channel= 16x8 yd. Blue cones 8 yd apart and 8 yd from tall cone. 1 ball per group.

Instructions:

Players keep in the same group, set up like above, 2 on ball, 1 across. Inside of foot pass across,

to their partner on the other side.

Coaching Points:

1. Inside of the foot pass across.

2. Close the space fast.

3. Slow, short steps when space is closed.

4. Angle on. Have a front foot.

Progressions:

1. Pass and follow pass.

2. Blue player passes and becomes pressuring shadow defender, red player dribbles back.

Receiving straight pass (pressure) (25 mins)

Organization:

Approx 12x16 yard area. 4 players. 1 ball.

Instructions:

All players begin down the centre line of the area. B begins by checking to get free from defender. Start with semi-opposed defender, then full pressure in Progression 2.

Coaching Points:

(1). Open body shape to receive.

(2). Communication "feet" - Show front foot with hand (protect ball)

(3). Checking of shoulder as they open gap and as ball travels (read movement of defenders / attackers)

(4). Decision making based on location of defender

Option 1- Check shoulder and can you open up back foot to play to C?

Option 2- Is defender tight and denying the turn? Play back to A who plays to C.

(5). Pass to the front foot or back foot

(6). Timing and quality of movement

Progressions: (40 seconds per round). High intensity so use coaching points during stoppages.

(1). Semi-opposed. Players get used to checking shoulder and open body shape to receive. Switch middle players until full rotation achieved and everyone has been defender.

(2). Opposed- Full pressure and no restrictions of the defender. Rotate all the way through again.

Possession activity (15 mins)

Organization: 40x40 yd area. 2 teams of 5. Play 3 v. 3 in the middle. 1 target from each team on end lines.

Instructions: Possession game. Use target players to keep possession. If you pass to a target player, you change out with them. Count passes out loud. 7 passes consecutively = 1 point.

Coaching Points:

Organization: 4v4. First team to score stays on and losing team goes off.

Coaching Points: Challenge players to apply what we worked on in the session.
