Attack Pattern; Attacking on the wings (25 mins)

The winger start the drill with dribbling at the dummie. When he starts his dribble the attacking mid is showing for the ball in the middle. The winger will pass the ball and right away makes a run into the open space on the wings. The attacking mid will send the winger with the give and go.

.

After the winger is sent he dribbles the ball into the 18 yard box, towards the goal. The 2 center forwards are crossing their runs and the attacking midfielder is supporting them. The defender will have to chose who he will be marking.

.

Coaching remarks

- Winger attacks the dummie and runs deep right after making the pass to the center midfielder

- Forward stay high to keep the center defenders away and be close to the goal

- Attacking mid sends the ball in front of the winger, attacking the open space.

- Winger dribbles to the goal. While he does that the other 3 players get into position. we have the following positions:

- One player at the near post, between the 6 yard box and the PK spot (Near Post)

- One player at the far post, at the 6 yards box (if not offside!) (Far Post)

- One player between the PK spot and 18 yard box (Top of the box)

Wing Channel Game (25 mins)

Set Up: 6 v 6 + 2 wing players, and a GK in each goal.

Organization: Players try to work the ball and score, can play out to the wing players, only on a 1 touch pass [can start without this rule]. Wing players have 2 touches to send a service into the field for an attempt on goal. Goals do not have to come from crosses. Two points for goals coming from 1-touch finishes.

Variations: [1] Remove neutral wing players and have each join one team each, [2] touch limit inside field, [3] 1 touch finish, [4] every backwards pass must be followed by a one touch pass [5] In channel, only 1 defender can enter, creating a 2 v 1 situation. [6] Open up to end game without restrictions, no channels.

Coaching Points: accuracy of passing, crossing and finishing, variety of crosses, rythym and flow of passing to get into the wide areas, timing of runs, decision making on the ball, speed of thought, work rate, communication, movement off the ball and interplay with teammates, combinations, reinforce good habits
