Screen 1 (10 mins)

Organization: 15x20-25 meter grid divided up into 4 rectangles by rubber mats. 3 goals at either end, dividing the field length ways perfectly into thirds. 12 players (although numbers could easily be adjusted up with the addition of more goals and an increase in the size of the field), with 3 players in each rectangle. Player to serve, allowing coach to walk around and coach.

Instructions: Reds play with Reds and Yellows play with Yellows (no player can leave their grid). The ball is served in to the back line of either team. Once received the teams must try and pass through the lines (1 at a time) and eventually pass in to the goals (teams can pass backwards as well as forwards but always score in the same direction). When a goal is scored or the ball goes out the server restarts play by serving to the back line of the opposite team.

Players must defend zonally in order to prevent penetration (although a fun warm up, it must be remembered that it is the defending principles that are trying to be illicited here, not the attacking ones).

Coaching Points: (as this is the warm up, coaching points are less frequent and not as specific or detailed)

1) Do not get pulled too far out of position.

2) Pressure, Cover & Balance.

3) Defend in advance of the ball.

4) Deny penetration.

Screen 2 (15 mins)

Organization: Half field (or appropriate available space). Field divided into for verticle zones, with the 2 wide zones having more width. Attackers score to one large goal and the defenders have three mini goals to score in within in 5 passes of winning the ball back.

There is one server with all the balls that always plays the ball in to the attackers to restart the game when a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds or the defenders fail to score within 5 passes.

Instructions: Attackers play the ball to eachother and use take overs, dribbling and passing to get the defenders to start working zonally. No actual defending or trying to beat players for the first 5 minutes or so, just keep the ball moving in order to allow the defenders to work out the concepts.

After that time, the coach calls it and the gaem is live.

Coaching Points: (all coaching points are mindful of the principles of defending; Pressure, Delay, Support & Cover, Balance, Compactness, Control & Restraint & Counterattack).

Talk about the technical break downs thats effect the tactical efficacy of the game.

1) Body shape for covering & balancing defenders

2) Pressure, Cover & Balance

3) Travel as ball travels

4) Speed of approach (deny the attacker the space, slow down and jockey as you get there).

5) Show attacker inside or outside using body shape.

6) The closer to the ball they are, the more the defender marks the man, the further away the ball is the more he marks the dangerous space (marking in advanced of the ball) as the Channels are not rigid, BUT If breaking ranks do so quickly, effectively and be sure you can get there.

7) The defenders take their shape from the ball, their immediate opponent and the goal (expand on this).

8) Defenders stay tight as a unit around the ball, but must remain with in 'closing down' distance of their immediate opponent.

9) Talk about maintaining zones and 'passing attackers off' from zone to zone, especially in take overs etc.

10) Talk about the positioning within the zones, protecting against penetration and offering adequate angles of cover etc.

11) Communication - I'll go ball/You go ball etc.

12) Start to touch on the playing positions and how they relate to the training session (2, 3, 4 & 5).
