Coaching Build Up Play with GK, Back 4 and Deep Laying Midfielder

Drill Objective(s)

To train GK, back 4 and deep laying midfielder on their responsibilities in the build up phase.

Scenario 1 -

Develop attacking patterns playing against retreating medium block.

Scenario 2 -

Develop attacking patterns playing against high pressure high block

Age: 18+

No Players: 10+

Difficulty: Medium/Hard

Area/Time: 1/2 Field (20mins)

ORGANISATION:

Use 1/2 of a full size pitch with cones placed on outside touchlines so function is not full width. Working primarily with the yellow team.

1 goalkeeper (Green)

7 attackers (Yellows)

6 defenders (Blue)

Scoring:

Yellow team in 3 small goals on half way line and blue team in big goal when possession is turned over. Blues have 6 seconds to score a goal.

Scenario 1

Scenario 1 - Build Up Play - Against retreating medium block. (8 mins)

Drill Objective(s)

To train GK, back 4 and deep laying midfielder on their responsibilities in the build up phase.

1. Develop attacking patterns playing against retreating medium block.

Age: 18+

No Players: 10+

Area/Time: 1/2 Field (20mins)

ORGANISATION:

Use 1/2 of a full size pitch with cones placed on outside touchlines so function is not full width. Red cones mark a retreat line for blues to work to. Working primarily with the yellow team.

1 goalkeeper (Green)

7 attackers (Yellows)

6 defenders (Blue)

Instructions

1. Yellow team in defensive posture defending against blue team who are in attacking posture

2. Oppositon no. 10 blue hits a pass (mishit) into the GK. This pass should be shadowed back by defenders until safely in the GK’s hands.

1. Starting positions of all players on both team/Speed of ball into goalkeeper - 'Realism'

Scenario 1

Scenario 1 - Build Up Play - Transition From Defence to Attack Centrally against retreating blue defence. (8 mins)

ORGANISATION:

Instructions

1. Blues immediately retreat to red line making the pitch narrow and compact.

2. Yellow no. 4 and no. 5 give with and depth on edge of box. Yellow no. 2 and no. 3 provide width and depth by moving out to nearest touch. Gk move to edge of 6 yard area to be an option to recieve.

3. Yellow no.6 holds depth to allow centre backs more space

4. Yellow no. 8 and no.10 hold positions high in left & right central channels.

5. GK plays to any CB

6. Centre back looks to a/ break line immediately with pass or travel to create 2v1

2. Movement to receive and support play - "Be explosive in movement, timing and rhythm"

3. Angles and distances - "Keep the ball in your positions, its a positional game. You respect the distances to each other"

1. No. 5 travels forward with ball and engages opposition.

2. Can no.10 recieve on shoulder of opponent or can we use explosive double movment of no.10 to get away from his marker.

3. No.10 play around the corner and release no.3 (Timing of movement from no.3) or retain possesion.

1. Blues no.9 and no.10 stay high and split centre backs. Blue no.7, 8, 6 & 11 make midfield 4.

2. Yellow no. 4 and no. 5 give with and depth on edge of box and move down edge of box to allow more depth Yellow no. 2 and no. 3 provide width and depth by moving out to nearest touch and push higher when no. 6 drops in formation 1-3-4.

3. Yellow no.6 holds depth to allow no.4 & 5 more space, trigger to drop in between them when ball travels.

4. Yellow no. 8 and no.10 hold positions high in left & right central channels.

5. GK plays to any CB and move to edge of 6 yard to be an option for return pass

6. Centre back looks to a/ break line immediately with pass or travel to create 2v1

Instructions

1. GK, No 4, 5 & 6 play mini 4 v 2 game v blue opposition forwards.

2. Yellow no. 2 and no. 3 provide width and depth by moving out to nearest touch and push higher when no. 6 drops in formation 1-3-4.

3. Yellow no.6 drops in to recieve (half turn open body shape)

4. Yellow no. 8 and no.10 hold positions high in left & right central channels.

5. GK plays to any CB and move to edge of 6 yard to be an option for return pass

6. Centre back looks to a/ break line immediately with pass or travel to create 2v1. Use the 4 v 2 to your advantage, try and get the ball to deep laying playmaker who can turn and play forward.

1. No. 6 gets out and travels with ball - a/ break a line with a pass or with movement

2. Yellow no. 2 and no. 3 provide width and depth by moving out to nearest touch and push higher when no. 6 drops in formation 1-3-4.

3. Yellow no. 8 and no.10 hold positions high in left & right central channels. Play off shoulders and 'inbetween lines'

5. no. 8 & 10 can you recieve if not 'explosive' movement to get on ball

6. Can no.8 or 10 play no. 2 or 3? If not retain possession.
