warm up

Set Up 15min

Diamond shape

Players at each end. 1 player in middle

Instructions

A;Player 2 starts in centre of diamond then moves left or right to receive pass from player 1.

Player 2 opens up to receive and passes on to player 3, Players follow their pass. Players in queue should stretch while waiting.

Progression B

Player 2 starts in centre of diamond then moves left or right. Player 1 passes to player 3 who opens up to pass to 2 then moves to middle to receive from 2 and pass to next player at station 1.

Rotation Grid

Set Up (15min)

20x25m grid . Add a 2m wide central channel to create 3 zones. (15 mins). 6vs3. Footballs readily available next to the side of the playing area. Waiting players feed in balls to keep play continuous

Instructions.

6vs3. The two end groups of 3 players combine to maintain possession from the 3 yellow defenders. All players to start are restricted to their zones. The two end groups attempt to maintain possession and switch play when possible. When the defending team has won the possession back 3 times they rotate.

Instructions

• After switching play the 3 players in that end must rotate position before they can receive ball again .

• All passes must be below shoulder height.

• Play for 3-4 mins and then break to allow change of players.

Progressions

1. Central defender can leave central area and defend in all 3 zones.

2. 1 touch/2 touch

3. For defending team to switch they must win possession and make 2 passes.

4. All players must touch the ball before transfer to the opposite end.

Coaching Points

1) Play fast and keep play simple with limited touches. Playing the way you face when needed.

2) Supporting players should be working hard to provide good supporting angles for the player on the ball.

3) Playing the way you face.

4) Speed of thought (thinking a pass ahead).

5) Create supporting angles to play out from the back. Look to play forward whenever possible but do NOT force play.

6) Receiving the football the an open body position for awareness and making play less predictable.

Midfield 3 Rotation

Set Up

30 mins. 16 players

Field split into 3 zones.

Two teams of

Central Mids play for both teams

Both teams play 1-2-3-2

One midfielder can join attack once ball is played into forward zone.

Other players are not allowed to leave their zone.

Team that scores keeps possession and restarts from their own goal.

Play must progress through central zone.

COACHING POINTS

Shape of Midfield 3

Play quick and with limited touches.

Midfield 3 should be constantly rotating and moving to support the area of the field where possesion is.

Support should be offered immediately for player in possession after forward pass is made.

When not in possession midfield players need to move together and not become stretched or isolated.

Immediate pressure on the ball.

Screen passes into defending area.

Holding midfielder communicates to the two attacking midfielders and organizes them.

Decision on whether to counter attack or build up possession. Assess the situation and how many of the previously attacking team are committed forward

Prevent diagonal passes going through the unit.

Clear communication is key to organization.
