Warm Up (15 mins)

Warm Up

Ball Mastery.

Defensive Specific

Players approx 8-10 yards apart.

Red passes to Grey and closes down.

Grey advances forward and Red jockeys back 4-5 yards.

Red passes to Grey who lets the ball go through his legs, Grey retrieves and screens while Red jockeys.

Switch roles.

Progression

Set a cone behind the passer for the attacker to get the ball to which the defender must protect.

Possible Coaching Points

Speed of approach.

Slow down last few strides.

Body shape.

Bent knees,

Weight distribution.

Try to seize the initiative.

Pitch size and numbers to suit your group.

Attack v Defence - GK + LB CB CB RB + 2MF v 4 attacking midfielders / 2 CF's.

How to Play

Game realistic.

Attackers score past GK, if Defenders win ball they play through poles from the shaded area.

Observe...

Defensive "mentality".

Communication.

Spacing.

Decision making.

Awareness of danger. (Threat to goal).

Part (1) (20 mins)

PART (1)

Looking at defenders ability to defend the side of the pitch that play is on.

Organisation

Pitch is divided in to 4 quarters vertically.

How to Play

Encourage Grey team to use the width of the pitch.

Defenders to remain compact and defend one side of the pitch.

Do not allow wide player on opposite side drag LB or RB out of shape.

Only need to defend 3 of the 4 quarters across the pitch.

Opposite side FB use the far post as a positional marker.

MF to provide cover and protection and be the first to press to allow back 4 to keep their shape.

Opposite attacking player is not a threat without the ball.

Possible Coaching Points

Who closes down and where.

Speed of closing down.

Good communication needed.

Where to show player in possession.

When to try to intercept or tackle.

"Emergency" defending.

Possible Coaching Points

As the ball is moving (across the pitch) all the defenders should be moving.

MF and CB body shape to try to force the ball wide but be alert to shots from CF or CM.

GK communicate to try to keep a high line.
