Activity 1 (25 mins)

Organization:

Set up a 40x40 area with a 36x36 area on the inside. Split the players into 2 teams and have 3 from each team on the outside and the remaining players in the middle.

Instructions:

Each team has a ball and keeps possession in the middle of the area, with the aim of getting the ball to the outside players. The receiving outside players' first touch needs to stay in the outside area then their second touch brings them back into the area. The player that passed the ball now becomes the outside player.

Move the ball quickly. 2 or 3 passes in the middle then play to the outside players. This needs to be high intensity and good quality.

Progressions:

1- The outside players first touch now comes back into the area.

2- The outside players now play a give and go with the person they received the ball from.

3- The outside players move to the ball when receiving. They should gain control of the ball before it enters the outside area.

4- Play with 1 ball. The teams try to keep possession from the other team whilst trying to get it to the outside players.

Coaching Points:

Take your first touch into space.

When controlling the ball watch it onto your foot. Heal down toe up with a locked ankle.

Body position when receiving the ball.

Activity 2 (25 mins)

Organization:

Set up a 50x35 area with an area for only the wide players. Split the players into 2 even teams and organise them into a formation.

Instructions:

This is a possession game with the aim of getting the ball to the outside players as much as possible. The wide midfielders can choose to pass the ball back into the centre midfielders or run down the wing to cross the ball. They only play 1v1 against the opposition wide midfielder.

If the wide players are running down the wing to cross the ball, the opposite winger from the same team should be keeping up with play so that they can attack the back post.

Progressions:

1- The wide players can cut in and shoot if the opportunity is there.

2- If the wide players cut in an other midfielder can overlap them to maintain width.

Coaching Points:

Wide players drop back when the goalkeeper or defenders have the ball to become a passing option.

Wide players must chase back to defend against the opposition winger.

The players in the middle should be looking to get the ball wide as much as possible.

When the defending team is numbers up can we get the ball to the opposite side of the field away from pressure.
