warm-up

Organization:

30x30 yard grid

3 pinnies

2 balls (extras on outside of grid

Instructions:

3 Players start off as defenders holding the a pinnie each in there hand.

Defenders must look to simply touch a ball or force a ball out of play via a bad pass/touch from an attacker, if they do this the attacker who lost possession takes the pinnie and becomes a defender and the previous defender becomes an attacker.

Attackers must help each other to keep possession of both soccer balls.

Coaching Points:

Communication

Awareness of space/pressure etc.

Main Theme

Organization:

Three teams of four players, each set up in their own zone.

Instructions:

Teams in endzones work together to make as many long passes to each other as possible without losing possession to teh blues in the centre zone. Blues may send up to two players into each endzone to pressure ball.

Coaching Points:

- Quality of short passing, first touch, communication and movement to posses the ball in the 4v2.

- Quality of long pass to switch the ball.

- Timing of long pass - Don't force it.

Progressions:

- Make it a competition between the three groups.

Conditioned Game

Organization:

1. 40x30 area with 10yd wide channels.

2. Set up two areas for team of 16.

3. 4v4 in each area.

Instructions:

1. If wide channel is empty, defending team is not allowed in it.

2. Two attacking players allowed in wide channels at once.

3. Only one defending player allowed in wide channel if attackers are present.

4. Service into wide channels must be a lofted pass.

Coaching Points:

1. Movement into wide areas.

2. Recognition of numbers advantages.

3. Overlapping runs.

4. Diagonal runs.

5. Speed of play - change flanks quickly.

6. Quality of pass and first touch.

Progressions: Remove wide channels.

Functional practice - Width from FBs amd WFs

Organization:

1. Field set up as shown.

2. Two wide counter goals.

3. Plenty of balls on outside.

Instructions:

1. Two teams set up as shown.

2. Attacking team: 4-3-3.

3. Defending team: 2-2-2.

4. Coaches as GKs. Coach on attacking team's side is GK/server.

5. Ball starts from server.

6. Attacking team plays to goal.

7. Defending team plays to counter goals or looks to play server with lofted pass.

8. If ball goes out of play or goal is scored, restart from server.

Coaching Points:

1. Fullbacks and wing forwards provide width.

2. 1. Remove wide counter goals and play to central goal.
