5 v 3 possession Game (20 mins)

Possession Game: (20 Mins)

5v3 or 6v3- (4 Players on the outside and 1 or 2 pivot inside vs 3 defenders)

30 x 30 metre - Size dependant size numbers.

This game should end with the players playing predominantly one and two touch, without the coach having to put those restrictions on the game.

Emphasis is to play in between the lines and trying to bounce of the pivot to move forward.

No player is restricted in where they can go. The key to success for the team in possession (Yellows at the moment) is to maintain their disciplne and stay roughly between the cones as indicated. This way the player with the ball will have more options. More triangles are created and the 4 defenders (Reds at the moment) should struggle to regain possession.

As soon as the defending team regain possession they continues to keep the ball of the one pivot and after 20 secs if the pivot has not regain possession 1 player from the outside will go in to help to regain possession.

Rotate the defending team every 2 minutes.

Learning Objectives

*Recognising where to position yourself to be available for a team mate.

*Learning that by having the discipline to maintain your position, by shuffling only a few yards in any direction, your team mates will always know where you are and will be able to retain possession easily.

Technical

*Body shape - Always open to see as much as possible/to be aware of as many options as possible.

*Passing - Weight/Timing of release.

*Receiving - away from pressure, to entice pressure.

*Direction changes, ball manipulation.

Tactical

*Understanding where to position yourself to be available for the ball, and being aware of as many of your options as possible when in possession of the ball.

Physical

*Low to medium intensity when in possession.

*High intensity when out of possession.

Psychological/Social

*Intelligence to expand pitch when necessary.

*Desire to deny space without the ball.

*Knowledge of triggers of when to press.

Half Pitch Game (20 mins)

Expanded Sm Sided Game/Fitness (20 min)

Set Up

Set-up a pitch suitable for a SSG 6 v 6 or 7 v 7 or 8 v 8 with 1 or 2 Jokers & 2 GKs. Dependant on the numbers available.

Split players into two teams.

a. Teams must have every outfield player in their opponent’s half to score. This forces players to move up and down the field throughout.

b. Team that Scores retains possession and starts immediately from their own goal keeper. Keeper must start the play with no longer than 5 secs after the team has scored.

Coaching Points:

1. Focus on the group to get past the half way line to score

2. Closest Player without the Ball must Press immediately

3. Progress the exercise from 2 touch to 3 to free.

4. Keep tactical coaching to a minimum. Focus on Work rate.
