1-4-3-3

Organization:

GK + Back Four

Goalkeeper, two center-backs, and two fullbacks.

Midfield Three

Defensive/holding midfielder (6), center midfielder (8), attacking midfielder (10).

The 6 plays as a screener in front of the back four. In attack, provide support around the ball, negative/back pass option, option to play ball out of the back, pivot for switching the point of attack. Defensively, tuck in between center-backs when necessary (especially in transition if fullbacks have pushed forward and are slow to get back).

The 8 plays box-to-box. Defensively, provides help for the 6. In attack, provides support for the 10. Looks to distribute and get forward occassionally without losing position.

The 10 has freedom to move all over the attacking front. Link up between midfield and forwards. Support, distribute, create, finish.

The Front Three

Two wing forwards and a center-forward.

The wing forwards look to provide width and depth. Make use of 2v1s with the center-forward or fullbacks. Look to cross or make diagonal runs towards the box. Defensively, track back when opposing fullbacks get forward, set line of confontation, press to win the ball higher up the field.

The 9 provides depth. Lots of mobility and freedom to find space along the attacking front.

1-4-4-2

Organization:

GK + Back Four

Same as in previous set-up. Main difference: fullbacks look to combine more with wingers in middle third rather than attacking third.

Midfield Four

Two wingers and two center-midfielders.

Two wingers start from deeper position than in 1-4-3-3. More defensive responsibility in midfield. Look to tuck in when defending. When attacking, provide width, look to play crosses, shoot from distance, combine with forwards.

Two center-mids do not have clearly defined roles. Both attack and both defend throughout different phases of the game. Players should be disciplined and focused to recognize when one player pushes forward, the other stays back. Essentially, both players interchange the 6 and 8 roles throughout the game. Both players should get behind the ball when defending/out of possession.

Front Two

The 9 and 10 move along the attacking front. Roles can be interchanged throughout the game or roles can be fixed, depending on the situation, game, opponent, players, etc. Generally, one player (the 9) looks to play as target with the 10 playing a more free-flowing role.
