Warm-up: Rondo (10 mins)

Organization:

10 x 10 or 15 x 15 depending on numbers

Player 1 (defender) : 2 (attackers) ratio

Max amount of player in a grid = 5 attackers

Instructions:

1. Possession game where there is 1 defender every 2 players. Defender tries to steal the ball. "Attackers" try to possess. (Much like keep away)

2. Defender tries to touch the ball. If he/she does they switch with the player who lost possession.

3. If the ball goes out the defender stays the same (defenders must touch or steal the ball away to become an attacker)

4. Progress to Rondo transfer box (P3)

Coaching Points:

1. Communication

2. Awareness of space/pressure etc.

3. Try to play to back foot and turn to switch ball in other direction when receive it if possible

4. Quality/weight of passes.

5. Angles/distances of support

6. Constantly re-evaluate your position (can I be in a better position?)

Progressions:

(P1) - 5 passes equals a life against the current defender. Must stay in for a second round after touching the ball

(P2) - A nutmeg or a through ball (if there are two defenders) counts away a life against the defenders.

(P3) - Rondo transfer: two grids are combined and the teams work against each other

Passing: 1st touch

(from Ian Richard's: Curriculum, Tier 2, Passing)

Organization:

10 x 30 yard area with 2 x 5 yard area either end, set up as shown

Players work in teams

One ball per team

Instructions:

Players must look to drive the ball into their partner’s area

Their partner must attempt to control the ball without leaving their area

If the ball lands in the box, the player that hit the driven ball gets a point

If the receiver can control the ball inside the box with 1 touch, they also receive a point

Coaching Points:

Angle of approach

Head up to observe target

Placement of non-kicking foot

Hitting ball slightly off center – opposite to kicking foot

Body weight over ball (this is effected by placement of non-kicking foot)

2nd knuckle of big toe

Progressions:

P – Increase service distance

P – Reduce controlling area

R – Reduce service distance

Passing + Receiving with a Shadow

Organization:

30 x 30 circle (size depending on numbers)

3 Equal number of teams

1 team: Each player with a ball

Instructions:

1. As in diagram, blue players start with the ball first. Red players shadow the blue. Yellow players are spread out around the perimeters of the circle.

2. Blue player passes the ball into the Yellow players for a point.

3. The Yellow player returns the ball to the Blue player. Blue player must find a new Yellow player to pass to.

4. (P1) Shadow defenders are live, if Red touches the ball that is a point taken away from the Bellow player.

5. (P2) Yellow receiving player decides to either pass or dribble the ball, depending on red pressure.

Coaching Points:

1. Body Shape - Side body shape; Using arms to feel the defender; Low center of gravity (knees bent; expand body area)

2. Approach - Creating space: movement away from the ball; Checking in: movement towards the ball; Awareness: Can we take the ball on our front/back foot depending on pressure; Ball furthest from defender, body in between.

3. Surface technique - Sole of the foot, using the foot furthest from the opposing player; Rolling with the inside or outside of the foot based on pressure.

4. Awareness - Timing and quality of pass; Timing of movement away/toward ball; Creating space; Decision making once full pressure is added (front or back foot)

5. Execution of move - Ability to hold off opposing player; Placing the ball on the furthest foot from the defender; Finding space to turn or recognizing when to use support.

Progressions:

(P1) - Shadow players, defenders, are live.

(P2) - Blue receiving player decides to either pass or dribble the ball, depending on red pressure.

Coaching Points:

1. Recognizing when to dribble vs. pass

2. Expanding the space we use when we're in possession

3. Movement off the ball

4. Quality of pass / receiving (using the proper techniques)

(R1) - Can only pass through the gates to connect. Can't crossover
