Ball Manipulation & Control (30 mins)

Learning Objectives

Mastery of the ball is the very heart of the game. The skill to make the ball do what we want it to do, to be able to place it exactly where you want it to go, to be comfortable with it in our possession, these are the foundations of the game and the basic building blocks for future successful players.

Players work in 2s, dribbling the ball towards the middle line, making as many touches as possible on the ball.

When they meet each other in the middle, they perform a turn and go back from where they have started, so they can start again.

- To improve mastery of feints.

- Timing of feint.

- Body shape/desguise.

- Over ball for balance, low/quick step to side.

- Part of foot used - inside/outside/sole.

- Perform turns, such as Inside & outside, drag back, Cruyff, Maradona`s Turn, etc...

Passing Drill (30 mins)

Objectives:

To develop good habits by,

1- Receiving the ball on angles.

2- Receiving the ball on the half turn.

3- Receiving the ball with back foot.

We start the drill with 2 balls, then 3 and we finish the drill with 4 balls at once.

This improves awareness and creating space as an individual.

Coaching Points:

1- All players must go to meet the ball when receiving a pass.

2- It is important that players receive the ball at an angle and with back foot (the foot furthest away from the ball) this would put players automatically on the half turn so they can see all players involved.

3- Creat space by checking (move away from the ball then return to meet it).

The benefit from this will develop a player efficiency, mobility and awareness with or without the ball.

Progression:

Change direction of the drill from anti-clockwise to clockwise.

A simple command to the players of "change" will achive this.

1v1 & 2v2 Duel (30 mins)

Learning Objectives

To develop ball control, dribbling, feints and change of direction in a 1v1 and 2v2 duel.

Description

In a area of 20x15 yards the players compete in 1v1 and 2v2 situations.

The coach plays a ball to the centre of the pitch. The first player to reach the ball becomes the attacker and aims to score in 1 of the 2 goals.

If the defender manages to tackle or intercept the ball he becomes the attacker.

The use of the 2 goals in this exercise increases the options for changes in direction and different feints.

Coaching Points

The attacker needs to use his body as a barrier between the defender and the ball to protecting it.

The attacker needs to keep the ball close to their feet using feints and quick change of direction when needed to get away and score.

Developing Possession (30 mins)

Practice Organisation

We play 4v4 possession in a 20x20 yard area. A player is positioned on each of the 20 yard perimeter lines. The players inside the grid can pass to the perimeter players if they wish. The perimeter players can move along their line looking to receive a pass and play the ball back into the grid but they must avoid taking too long to make the pass.

Progression

- Perimeter player can dribble the ball in and change places with the player that passes to him.

- Play directional

Key Coaching Points

- When the inside player receives a pass from the perimeter player, he should look to open up and see if he can turn.

- Pace of pass

- Body shape

- Think two or three moves ahead

-Stretch area, make the space as big as possible
