Warm Up

Small rectangle (Y) within larger one (X). Every player has a ball and they begin spread across X, ignoring Y. Players move at pace with the ball using the outside and laces of both feet. After 90 seconds coach signals for them to switch to Y, focusing on close control in a tighter space, ball manipulation with the inside and sole of both feet.

Progression: Add ball manipulation skill to enter Y and another to exit (e.g outside cut to enter, cruyff to exit). Continue 90 sec cycles.

1 v 1 Basic (20 mins)

1 v 1

Defender starts at A, attacker starts at C. As attacker starts dribble from C to D, defender runs from A to B and enters area. When attacker gets to D they enter the area. The goal for the attacker is then to cross the red line with the ball under control.

Progress to 2 v 1 to incorporate decision making on the attacking side of the ball.

Progress to assigning a specific turn for the attacker to enter the area at D.

Coaching Points:

- Keep the ball in your zone at all times (the area around your feet where you can always touch the ball)

- Imbalance the defender (demonstrate head/shoulder fake)

- Plan ahead - don't wait for and react to defender's approach, dictate play

Coach individual players by pulling them from the game momentarily and either correcting something that may have gone wrong or reaffirming a correct decision. If a particularly good example of a combination takes place, pause the game and walk both teams through it.
