Finishing From A Cross (20 mins)

SetUp

Penalty area, set up as shown.

Crossers in wide channels, attackers and GK

Organization

Attacking players starts with the ball and play wide to crosser. Attacking players attack the box to try to get on the end of a cross.

Progressions

1) Early Cross. Attackers try to time their runs beyond the defenders.

2) Cutback Cross. Attacker 1 plays to one crosser 1, gets ball back and switches deep to crosser 2. Attacker 1 attacks near post, attacker 2 makes late run. Crosser cuts ball back for attacker 2 to shoot

3) Reverse Cross. Left and right footed crossers switch. Crossers cut back inside on to stronger foot for a cross over the to. Attackers try to time their runs beyond the defenders.

Timing of runs and movement into the box

Timing and angle of runs off each other - cross over, attack front & back post, not in same line

Quality cross into the box - early, low & hard, bend, behind defenders, away from GK

For reverse cross, lots of bend - finesse, height to beat the defenders

3v3+2 Wide Play (20 mins)

SetUp

Double penalty area, set up as shown.

Crossers in wide channels, 3v3 plus GKs

Organization

3v3 Game plus wide players. Wide players cannot be challanged in their zone. Wide players can join attack on weak side.

Progressions

1) Ball must visit the wide channel before a goal can be scored - provide ideas for wingers, encourage speed of play, coach striker movement

2) Free play

Can players show creativity and confidence when attacking. However, do players recognize Risk vs Retain, not forcing the play.
