Warm Up (10 mins)

Organization:

-20x30 grid with every player on a ball.

Instructions:

-Players dribble around the area attempting to get to 50 touches as quickly as possible.

-After 50 touches, players leave their ball and find a new one to close down.

-Process repeats itself as players warm up and start putting unopposed pressure on the ball as the first defender.

Coaching Points:

- Slow down on approach to ball

- Smaller steps the closer you get to ball

- Bend knees

- What is good distance from the ball(attacker) when defending?

- Angle run to 'show inside' or 'show outside'

Developmental Repetitions (10 mins)

Organization: Players work in pairs, there are 3 lines 1,2 & 3.

Instructions: Players pass ball to each other on line 2 when they get to 5 passes the player in possession of the ball dribbles at the opposite player forcing them back to line 1 or 3. Once they get to the line then the player who was defending then dribbles the ball back at the opposite player back to line 2 then start to pass straight away.

Players cannot steal the ball.

Players rotate each go in the middle.

Coaching Points:

Defending player

- Slow down as approach player

- Arms distance away

- Knee’s bent

- Side body shape

- Body position slightly to one side of the ball

- Which way are you forcing the player (making play predictable, force onto weaker foot etc.)

Attacking Player

- Good first touch

- Head up as ball travels

- Touch every step

- Change of speed

- Change of direction

- Be creative

Progressions: Players can dribble the ball when ever they like to try and catch the opposite player by suprise.

Main Theme 1: 1v1 Defending (30 mins)

Organization:

-Two 20x20 grids

-1v1 defending in each grid

Instructions:

-1v1 defending in each grid, defender starts with the ball and plays it to the attackers feet.

-Defender must stop the attacker from bringing the ball into the "end-zone."

-Roles are switched once every player on the team goes once.

Coaching Points:

-As first defender, main job is to apply pressure on the ball. Must deny penetration.

-Proper angle and speed of approach

-Body shape, knees are bent and never flat on our feet.

Conditioned end game (20 mins)

Organization

14 players set up as shown

1 ball (Additional around the outside)

Instructions:

Play 2 v 2 in each of the three zones

Players can only operate within their assigned zone

Normal restart rules apply

Coaching Points:

Close down quickly

Angle of approach to make play predictable

Slow down as you approach the attacker

Bend the knees, stay sideways onto the ball
