Ball Mastery

Aim: Improve player’s ability to manipulate the movement of a ball.

Drill: Each player has a ball inside the square. Player’s begin by dribbling around the grid using different parts of both of their feet. The coach can change to the conditions e.g. only right foot, or only inside of foot.

Coaches teach players different skills to work on e.g. toe taps, inside taps, V’s, triangles.

Key Points: Focus on correct technique before speed. Work on getting the movements correct at walking speed before increasing to a jog.

Encourage players to get as many touches on the ball as they can.

The aim of this activity is to make players comfortable on the ball so that they feel confident in any situation.

Box running

Aim: Develop players ability to keep control of a bal while running with it.

Drill: The players are divided into 4 groups of 3 players and positioned in the corner

grids with a ball each as shown.

The 3 players in the corners wear different colour bibs or are numbered 1-3.

On the coaches signal all players of the same group (all orange or #1’s) run with

the ball to the next corner followed by the next group, again after the coaches

signal.

When everyone is back in the grid where they started; we start again but now in

the other direction using the other foot only. In the beginning the speed is low and should be raised gradually.

Key Points: Ensure player's are using both feet.

Encourage the ball to be pushed out in front of the players without letting the ball get away from them

Shark

Aim: To improve player’s confidence when running with the ball.

Drill: Players need to make it from one box (safe zone) to the next without being tackled. The two taggers (sharks) in the middle try to tackle the players. The player that gets tackled the least is the winner.

Key Points: Focus on keeping the ball under control. If the player takes a touch that is to big it will increase their chance of losing the ball. If the player keeps the ball to close they will run to slow and won’t make it to the next safe zone (island).

Get players to push the ball out in front of them with their laces.

Running with the BAll

Aim: Apply the skill we are working on in a more game like setting with a bit of pressure from a defender.

Drill: Players line up in pairs between a set of cones passing the ball back and forward. When the pair’s number is called, they complete one more pass. The person furthest from the goal then plays a pass past their partner towards the goal. The attacking player turns and runs with the ball towards goal before shooting. The defending player chases the attacker after they have played their pass.

After shooting the players swap rolls and return to passing waiting for their number to be called again.

Key Points: The attacker needs to apply the skills they have worked on so that they can evade the defender. It is important that each touch of the ball pushes the ball a few steps in front of the player.

Attackers should work on always keeping their body between the ball and the defender.

Players need to work on the balance between speed and control.

Game

Aim: Put the skllls worked on during the session into a game situation.

Drill: Game of two even sides. Focus is on the football and skills rather than the goals. Rules will be put in place to encourage players to work on the skills from the session.

Key Points: Encourage players to focus on the focus area of the session.

Encourage players to use the whole field to maximise their space and time on the ball.

Encourage players to communicate as much a possible so that they can help team mates.
