Control Warm Up (20 mins)

Organization:

1. Open area (half of field max), set up as shown

2. 3 groups of 3-4 players

3. 1 ball per group (three total)

Instructions:

1. Players must pass and move around the area

2. Players are not permitted to play to those in their group

3. After a pass is made quickly go and find the next pass to receive

Coaching Points:

1. Combination selection

2. Timing of the combination

3. Play at speed

4. Read visual cues

Progressions:

1. P – Add more balls so combinations must be made quick

2. P – Players m ust receive from one color and play to different color

3. R – Start with the ball in hand to establish movements of give and go or overlap

2v1 decision making/combination (15 mins)

Organization:

1. 30 x 20 yard area, set up as shown

2. 3 groups of 2 players, set up as shown

3. 1 ball (additional around the outside)

Instructions:

1. One group works in the middle for a set time period

2. Player A presses the ball but does not tackle, Player B support the ball

3. The incoming attacker has the option to beat the pressing player w ith a dribble or combination

4. The attacking player then passes off to the next person in line at the opposite side of the area

5. Player B then presses whilst Player A offers support

6. Rotate groups after a set time

Coaching Points:

1. Comm it the defender to the ball

2. Support player to offer support for combination at the front or to the side

3. Angle and distance of support player

4. Close the distance to combine quicker

5. Decision making – when to pass, when to dribble

Progressions:

Allow the pressing player to win the ball

Skill Development 2 (15 mins)

Organization:

1. 30 x 20 yard area, set up as show n

2. 3 groups of 2 players

3. 2 balls

Instructions:

1. Each player in Group A starts with a ball and dribbles out to Group B

2. Before they get to Group B they make a diagonal pass to Group C

3. Group B then drop back to replace Group A

4. Group A stay centrally to replace Group B

5. Group C then restart the sequence from the other side

6. To start passes should be made with the inside of the foot

7. Progress to outside of the foot

8. Progress to scissors – players now shape to pass and dribble around the outside of the central player before making their pass diagonally

Coaching Points:

1. Timing of the pass

2. Specific technical application of the pass

3. Timing of dribbling technique

4. Fakes and use of the upper body to sell the pass

Progressions

P – The pass should now be made in front of the waiting player to help improve speed of play

R – Reduce the passing distance by m aking the space 20 x 2 0

Conditioned Game - Improve combination play (15 mins)

Organization:

1. 50 x 30 yard area with halfway line shown by markers, set up as shown

2. 2 team s of 4 players (plus G K’s), w ith 2 floating

players (play m akers)

3. 1 ball (additional around the outside)

Instructions:

1. Teams play 4v4+ 2, the floating players play for the team in possession

2. Each floating player is assigned one half of the field to operate in

3. Floating players can score

4. Normal restart rules apply

Coaching Points:

1. 1st Attacker to commit defender to the ball

2. 2nd Attacker to offer support

3. Angle and distance of 2nd attacker

4. Decision making of each player

5. Speed of play

6. Teach the floating player to keep finding the ball

Progressions:

P – Reduce players to tw o touches

R – A llow floating players to operate all over the field
