This session is a re run of first week when I changed the session at the field based on the low numbers. I really want to see how the boys deal with some of the game scenarios here so I want to run this if numbers are up on the previous week.

Warm up - Dynamic (15 mins)

Organization:

Five cones. First section = 12 yards, second section = 10 yards, third section - 12 yards

Players in two lines either side of cones

Instructions:

Jogging x3

Flicks & Knees Up

Groin stretch, w/twist

Side groin stretch

Open and close the gate

Walk and pull knees up alternately - Quad stretch;

Inside foot pull up while walking;

Hamstring stretch

Skips –alternate arms and twists

50%/75%/100% run.

Static stretches – Achilles, Gluteus

Coaching Points:

First exercise done in section 1 then walk for 10 yards then second exercise in section 3 then always jog back.

1v1 + 4 (20 mins)

Organization:

Six players, one ball with spares, using a 15x15 area

Four are positioned around the outside and a 1v1 is organized inside the grid

Instructions:

Players inside the area compete for the ball. Points are awarded for switching the ball from end-line to end-line. In the diagram, (A) has received the first pass from player (B). To score (A) must successfully complete a pass to player (C). (A) May use any of the perimeter players as support. Perimeter players limited to two-touch. If a point is scored next ball is put into play by any of the perimeter players – so the direction continually changes.

Play for set time then rotate.

Coaching Points:

Supporting angles

Sharp movement – changes of speed etc.

Receive balls in a half-turned position - quick switching of the ball.

Quality of passing

Progressions:

If players find this easy serve balls in mid air.

7v7 gate game (20 mins)

Organization:

A 7v7 is organized inside a 30x30/40 yard area.

5 gates are created using cones or flags.

A supply of balls is placed next to the coach outside the grid to enable a high tempo.

Instructions:

Both teams compete for the ball and attempt to score by passing the ball successfully to a teammate through any of the gates. Play is continuous for a set time. Cannot pass through same gate twice.

Coaching Points:

Maintain possession - constant movement and sharp passing.

Supporting angles.

First touch

Be aware of penetrating balls through the gates.

Attack the space – recognize goal-scoring opportunities early!

Progressions:

Allow players to pass AND dribble through gates

Valencia game (20 mins)

Organization:

Using one penalty area, have 4 lines of players, two either side of the goal as shown.

The outer two, (yellow), are attackers, the inner two are defenders.

Another group of attackers sets up 15-20yds outside the penalty area, with a supply of balls.

Instructions:

On coach’s ‘go’, a player from the central group moves forward with the ball. At the same time, two attackers and two defenders from both sides of the goal head out to create a 3v2.

Attackers get into a scoring opportunity quickly and score. Play Offside

Coaching Points:

Positive attitude to score.

Receive on the half-turn, create space and take a chance.

Quick decisions

Rebounds!

Progressions:

Play 3v3; 4v4

Finish with half field, Offence v Defence game – have two small goals at each end of halfway line to give defenders targets to score through.
