Defending in own half with back 6

Organisation for the Funtion:

-1/2 pitch using full width (2 gates for defending team to score)

-collection of balls by 1/2 line (it will be the starting point)

-6 defenders (2cbs, 2fbs, 2dmcs) - reds

-6 attackers (2cfs, 2amcs, 2ws) - blues

-Gk (green) for red team

Instructions:

2 teams compete. The defenders attempt to win the ball back or deny a good opportunity to score, then they retain possession and score in the small goals. The attacking team score in the big goal.

1- One of attacking centre midfielders for blues start play, peferably to an winger

2- The coach then work with the defensive unit to understand how to pressure the players and how the unit performs.

Progressions:

1- Once the ball go to a wide attacking player, it must return to one of the centre midfielders (unopposed phase) before they attempt to score

2- There must be a switch of play before the attacking team score in the goal

Topics to cover

- sliding as a unit to the strong side of the field (the side with the ball in it)

- fbs should pressurize wingers

- the dmcs screen the back 4 from balls into forwards feet

- mark your man and 1/2 the players next to you

-angles and distances of support

-delay

-compactness

- communication (leadership) who calls the line?

-If full back is beaten by winger, near centre back pressurize winger, near defensive midfielder cover the space left by that centre back. Far centre back marks his man and half of the other striker and while far full back tucks in the second defensive midfielder protect the "D" area

-If centre back is caught chasing winger by the bye line, near centre back cover space in line with the penalty spot, near defensive midfielder covers the space in line with near post. Far centre back covers the space in line with the the far post and while full back tucks in the second defensive midfielder protect the "D" area.

-Gk move sideaways to same direction to the strong side (where the ball is played at)

Organisation for the Small Sided Game (SSG):

Both teams in 4-2-2+ 2 Gks, one in each end in 3/4 pitch using full width. Teams compete and attempt to score in goals.

Variations:

-Counts as 2 goals if attacking team manage to score after a switch of play

-Defending team is only allowed to score after 5 consecutive passes beyond the red marked zone

Key coaching points:

- encourage communication in the back

- fast transition to organize the defensive line quickly

- intensity to defend

- ensure coverage is correct

- ensure balance is correct

- ensure individual defending is correct
