2v1 Defending (25 mins)

Description - Area 15x6yds, divided into two equal size grids. 4 players, 1 ball. Practice starts with 2 attackers (blues) and 1 defender (red) in one half, with 4th player (red) in opposite half. Attackers play 2v1 with the objective of stopping ball dead on end line. If defender wins ball it is passed to team mate in opposite half, who looks to turn, run with the ball and stop it on opposite end line. Attackers attempt to recover on losing possession. If defender is successful in achieving their objective, they become attackers in initial 2v1

Technical - defending 1v1 (touch tight, show one way, body low), tackling, dribbling & passing on winning possession

Tactical - body shape (show one way), delay forward movements by attackers, try isolating player with ball , deflecting play away from goal, attack quickly or keep the ball after winning possession

Physical - speed, agility, balance, acceleration (after winning possession), strength

Psychological/Social - communication, teamwork, competition, decision making, enjoyment

Learning Objectives

Deny - Stop forward runs, protect space behind

Delay - Slow attackers down, central position to stop runs down either side

Deflect - Change body position to force play either down the sides or away from other attacker, isolate player with the ball

Defend - Take opportunities to win the ball, patience

1v1 Defending (30 mins)

Organization: 15x7 meter grid. As many as required.

Instructions: First player passes to the receiver. Receiver tries to score 1v1. Passer must defend and can do so as soon as they pass the ball. Drill repeats at the same end until coach changes.

Coaching Points:

1) Defensive players travel as fast as they can when the ball is travelling to reduce the amount of ground the attacker can cover.

2) Defender arcs their run to force the attacker 1 way or the other and uses the touchline as an extra defender. Try to make the play more predictable.

3) Do not dive in. Hustle and jostle. Force a mistake.

4) Body position should be side on not square on. Facing the way the defender wants the attacker to go.

5) Toe poke if possible.

6) Back foot block tackle if attacker runs at/past defender.

7) If beaten, defender must sprint to catch attacker.

8) If ball won by defender, then quick break ounter attacks should immediately occur towards the other goal.

9) Attackers first touch should trigger the defenders first movement and give them an idea of where to defend.

Progressions:
