Defending Centrally, 2 vs. 2

Organization:

3 sets of pairs. 2 - attackers 2 - defenders 2 - target players who play in the end boxes.

Activity:

2 vs. 2 defending.

Coaching Points:

-Can the attackers play the ball into the target players and for the defenders, cut the line off and force play inside into midfield.

-On the travel of the ball how quickly can you close down attackers space. Once you have closed that space down start to get yourself in a position to defend. Slow down, sit down.

-Start to effect the attackers decision making on the ball.

8 vs. 8 with Narrow Endlines

Organization:

Pitch split into thirds. The two end zones are narrowed off to encourage central play. Each end zone is 20yds long depending on age/ ability of players.

Activity:

Attacking team must play through the middle third. Forwards on attacking team can drop into mid zone to receive the ball. Only ever one at one time-forward to defending team can drop in to help midfielders.

Coaching Points

-Defend as a team to encourage winning the ball in the mid third. Once ball is won, think about possession v pentration. If the opportunity is on to attack quickly through the thirds try and score, or try and keep possession.

-Encourage front 3 to drop off when GK has the ball to encourage attcking to play out from the back.

-On the travel of the ball, can the front three think about pressing to stop the long ball. The tighter the pressure from the forwards the more it allows the midfielders to defend on shoulders.
