2v2 (10 mins)

2v2 set up. Field is split into 1/3s. Each line is different as session progress you will use different lines. Figure 1, starts with player A playing Player B. All turns start with a pass. Defenders ( D) will start to run, cover ground, as soon as the pass is made. Players A/ B score by passing the endline to "goal." Players can dribble or receive a pass in the "goal" zone to score. Figure 2, cones were set up to have a middle zone/ defender zone. As the session progresses, challenge defenders to cut down the space quick. You can use the "defending Zone" as a visual. One player must be in "defending zone" or above, when player B receives the ball as an example. Defending players can score, if they win the ball, by crossing opposite endline. Topics: for Defenders:pressure, cover, body shape, score after winning ball. For attackers: When to go 1v1, off ball movement, set up 2v1, over laps etc.

3v3 (10 mins)

Play advances into 3v3, leave middle cones for "defending zone." You can use the zone as a guidline for depth as well as pressure/ confrontation line. Play starts with A, ball in center, must play B or C, their choice. Attackers must cross endline on the dribble or receive a pass. Defenders can score after winning the ball. Attacking topics : combination play, finding 2v1, runs behind, runs off the ball etc. Defeding topic: Pressure, cover, balance, depth, communication, confrontation line etc.

4v4/ back 4/ mid 4 (10 mins)

Play progression into 4v4 ( back four, midfield four etc.) Attackers must still pass endline on the dribble or receive a pass. A will start with ball, play their choice or B, C or D. The defending line, can now be used as an offside line. This will help keep defenders connected, as well as attackers honest on runs behind. All attacking points are prior sections should be used. Defenders must really communicate to keep line together. I left all cones on the grid as visuals to the defenders. You can use the mid sections for height, compactness, speed of first defender, speed of recovery etc

4v3 / 4v4 delayed (10 mins)

. You can also use less defenders, end with 4v3, this could help with striker pressure on defenders or delay defending, with recovery defender player being added.

Play Defenders/mids vs mids/fwds. Team in red goes to endline, as before, must be on the dribble or receive a pass. Team in Green goes to goal. Pick formation depending on your team. 4-2 vs 4-2, 4-2 vs 3-3 as an example. Deferent restarts could change tempo of game: Balls start with coach, balls are outside midline attackers go grab them, no corners, yes corners etc.
