Defenders Unopposed

Millwall Lionesses u17 Centre of Excellence

Set-Up

The defensive 4 work unopposed, passing to progress up the field, the aim is to pass through the poles.

This is unopposed to give the players confidence and isolate shape.

Coaching Points

- communicate verbally & non-verbally to keep possession, passing when the player wants the pass, etc.

- body shape should be 'open', shoulder facing the field for balance & with an opportunity to see play

- consider receiving with the foot furthest from the ball to encourage time on the ball & balance.

- look/scan to identify movement of team-mates & threat from opposition

- move wide to create space

- one player should drop to create depth acting as an outlet/drop zone, if they cannot progress forward

Add Condition

Restrict touches (2-touch only, etc).

Spacial Recognition

As this is unopposed, defenders should identify -

- dictate the pace of the game (do not rush the pass, miss out the CB, etc)

- the importance of the outlet/drop zone

- when to pass to space & when to pass to feet (pass forward to encourage team-mates, pass to feet if space limited, etc)

Opposed

Progression One

Defence now consists of GK

GK's Role -

- acts as 'sweeper' & creates outlet / drop zone when there is opposition pressure

- encourages defence to move forward by keeping a high line when there is less opposition pressure

Phase of Play

Progression Two

Duration: 20 minutes

Change GK after 10 minutes

Add oppposition GK & CM for possession team and additional CM for opposition team.

Start -

(Always start from this point) Oposition team GK loses possession in delivery to LB/RB, etc of opposition who after gaiming possession must meet session objective.

Possession team must pass successfully between the poles, NOT strike at goal. Opposition GK acts as 'server'.

Coaching Points

- Use GK as 'pivot' to start play

- encourage minimal touches

this will get opposition 'out of shape' if pressing to gain possession

- progress when there is a a greater chance of reward

when opposition are out of position, progress up the field

- switch play after drawing opposition in

see the free player

- combination play with CM

use this player as a 'pivot', consider passing & moving

- variation in movement off of the ball

over-lap, under-lap, movement short to create / munipulate space, etc.

- variation in pass

aerial, to space, etc. Know the pass that the team-mate wants.
