Warm Up & 1v1 (30 mins)

8v2 rondo

Tag Game Warmup

1v1:

Setup:

Two 10x15 grids

2 teams. One on defense, one attacking.

Balls on top of 18 (where CB would be)

Activity:

CB plays ball to outside back who tries to beat defender to dribble through small goal.

If defender wins ball they go 1v1 with goalie (attacker not allowed to leave grid).

Coaching Points:

+ Close distance while ball is traveling (full sprint then get body in control as ball is received)

+ Check shoulder while closing (good habit)

+ Use sideline as a 2nd defender (get on your surfboard)

+ Play the ball or the man, not both

+ Match speed of attacker going backwards, look for mistake to tackle

+ If beaten on right, step with left foot to win space. If beaten on left, step with right foot.

Progression:

+ Add in a 2nd defender and 2nd attacker for 2v2. 2nd attacker comes from CM (#6) postition on one side and from Winger position on other side (#11) so that we can introduce how to defend those passing angles.

2v2+2 (15 mins)

Setup:

15x20 grid (2 grids setup)

3 teams of 2 (if odd numbers rotate in with a team)

extra balls around

Activity:

Team in possession works with neutrals to play 4v2.

Start with general possession, but then keep score where a goal is scored by getting ball from neutral to neutral.

Coaching Points:

+ Defensive players need to work together to make play predictable

+ Allow for sideways or backwards passes - NO penetration

+ Check shoulder when pressing to cut passing angles

Progressions:

+ Add a 3rd defender (either an all time defender or go 3v3)

6v3 with transition (15 mins)

Setup:

Two 30x20 grids side by side.

2 teams of 6 (numbered 1-5)

1 GK

Activity:

1 team has ball in grid and tries to complete 8 passes for a goal.

2nd team sends in 3 defenders to win ball back and transfer back to possession grid.

GK works the channel between grids to keep ball in original grid (can use hands).

Coaching Points:

+ Check shoulder as pressuring to know which way to push.

+ Cover defender should communicate with pressure to tell which way to push.

+ Make play predictable - passes sideways or backwards.

+ Press as a unit (all 3 defenders connected)

+ When attacking team loses ball, apply immediate pressure since they are numbers up in the area

Progression:

+ Make the game directional - attacking team is trying to get ball to GK's hands.

Pressing Choreography (20 mins)

Setup:

Half field

Groups of 5 players (3 forwards + 2 CM)

Activity:

5 attacking players work in unison to press based on where coach call's the ball is. For example, the above is "Left Back".

Players sprint from starting positions to where they would press.

Players do about 5 rotations and then rotate with next group of 5.

Coaching Points:

+ We are trying to force teams to play long by cutting off nearby passing options.

+ High intensity!

6v7 Pressing in attacking third (20 mins)

Setup:

7v8 as shown above (if not enough players, remove #6 for both teams to go 6v7)

Balls in goal.

Activity:

GK starts with ball and tries to play out to score in goals at half.

Defensive team presses ball and tries to score on goal.

Coaching Points:

+ Entice short balls and then press

+ Want to push play inside where we have 3 Center Mids

+ Quickly transition to goal when winning ball back in attacking 1/3

+ If win ball deeper, play simple pass and maintain possession

+ If defense is pressing too high, have attackers play long ball into goal (match realistic)

Progression:

+ Start teams higher up field and have Coach serve ball into CB's or over the top and press.

7v7 with pressing zones (20 mins)

Setup:

50x40 field

7v7 game with grids in each corner

Activity:

Teams play 7v7, but the defensive team can win a free kick if they force the attacking team to play into one of the pressing zones.

Coaching Points:

+ Apply everything from practice and work as a unit

Progression:

+ May need to make the zones larger to encourage the pressing

+ Likewise, may need to reduce field size to encourage pressing
