Description

Focus: Affecting the player's decision when pressure is tight, and there is no cover for the first defender. However, the player receiving the ball does not have time to turn and face the opposition.

Amount of Pressure: Two defenders - Pressure and Cover.

Type of Pressure: "Pressure" - Tight. Unable to turn and face opposition. Pressure angles body appropriately. "Cover" - Loose. Second defender does not present themselves as support for the first defender at an appropriate distance or angle. Second defender may be absent because they are assuming the ball will be played out wide.

Decisions looking to affect:

1. Ability to identify amount of pressure being applied to the ball, as the player receives it.

2. Choice to open up on the back foot - closer to the opponent, or receive the ball on the front foot to protect the ball and shield it away from the defender.

3. Recognition of the second defender. Is the second defender in a good spot to cover the first defender if I beat him/her? If so, do I have a supporting player I can pass the ball to?

4. If the second defender is not presenting themselves as a good option of support can the player with the ball beat the defender 1v1?

Moves: Driving across the goal. (A) Similar scenario to previous session "S3" review moves; (B) Xavi turn.

Technical Warm-up (15 mins)

Organization:

Dimensions vary on amount of players present

4v4 - 40 x 30

Instructions:

·  Following the player's dynamic warm-up, if enough numbers are present (minimum of 6), allow players to play. If there aren't enough players, players may continue to warm up by playing a Rondo.

·  Each session will be structured so that players will scrimmage twice, once after their dynamic warm-up, and the second at the end of the session. The objective of the first scrimmage is to review and deliberately practice concepts that were brought out in the previous session.

Coaching Points:

1. Vision - Player checking shoulders quickly before and after receiving the ball.

2. Players ability to recognize pressure (tight vs. loose)

3. Selection of foot and surface to receive the ball, based on pressure.

4. Player's ability to control and manipulate ball away from pressure, if they receive it on the wrong foot.

5. Execution of move.

6. Execution of next action - pass/shot.

Technical Repetition: Unopposed (15 mins)

Organization:

4 players per grid

1 Ball in play

Extra balls off to the side

Instructions:

As shown in diagram. Note Left-Grid demonstrates the technical repetition movement, the Right-Grid shows when pressure is applied.

1. Players evenly distributed on both endlines.

2. Endline with the most players starts with the ball first by passing to the opposite side, and then quickly closes down the space in between to defend.

3. Attacking player drives at an angle towards the corner of the grid to change the defenders movement and approach to the ball.

4. Attacking player commits the defender and performs the Xavi turn to change direction and get in behind the defender and connect with the endline player.

5. Progression: Add goals.

Condiitoned Activity/Game (Winter 15/16) (15 mins)

Organization:

Half Field

Requires minimum of 5 players (coach as server)

2 Stations will be ran at the same time

Additional players will create a short line behind #10/8

1 Ball; Additional off to the side with #10/8

Instructions:

1. Refer to Rotation.

2. Players are score 1 of 3 ways.

(i) Situation: #7 Receives the ball and defenders don't shift over quickly enough = Go to goal.

(ii) Situation: #7 Receives the ball, one defender shifts over to pressure, can we beat that defender 1v1?

(iii) Situation: #7 Receives the ball, both defenders shift over to pressure the ball, can we beat them with a pass (on the ground) to #11?

(Iv) Situation: #7 Receives the ball, both defenders shift over to pressure (compact), and #11 is not an option. Can we find #9 on the far post with a lofted pass over the other teams defensive line?

Rotation:

#10/8 > #9 > #7 > #11 > #4/5 (after three times through as an attacker)

Coaching Points:

1. Off the ball movement. Away to create space and to receive the ball.

2. Vision - checking to see where teammates movement is and recognizing the defenders positioning.

3. Decision making. Refer to Instructions.

(P) - 3v2 and 2v2 +1N

Instructions:

As shown in diagram. Same as previous screen Conditioned Activity/Game (Winter 15/16). Note this is deliberate practice and conditioning for desired responses based off of the defenders movement.

1. Focus is on recognizing that Pressure is tight and Cover is not present, quickly use a move to create space for you to connect with your target (goal) or teammate depending on the 2nd defenders positioning.

2. Similar scenario to previous session S3 - review moves.

3. Xavi turn.

Note:  Cover in the diagram is not present and supporting the first defender because he/she is concerned with the second attackers (#7) movement.

Rotation:

1. Two defenders stay in through two cycles. To increase tempo, have defenders alternate every cycle for immediate pressure.

2. Attacking group and defending group in for set time. After time has passed have groups switch roles.

2. Players ability to recognize pressure (tight vs. loose)
