Ball Mastery

Organization:

1. Open area.

2. Players facing coach.

3. One ball and cone per player.

Instructions:

1. Review from previous session.

2. V-moves: same foot for entire movement and, two feet (pull back one foot, push forward other foot).

Coaching Points:

1. Light on toes

2. Hop as drag ball back

3. Hip movement

4. Technical execution

Progressions:

1. Combine - one foot into two feet.

2. Competition - first player to 20.

1v1 Non/Semi-opposed

rganization:

1. 15x10 area (x2)

2. Players work in groups of 3.

3. One ball per player.

Instructions:

NON-OPPOSED:

1. First player from each line dribbles to halfway, performs V-L move and speed dribbles to end.

2. Next player goes as soon as player in front reaches opposite line..

SEMI-OPPOSED

1. Player on attacking side initiates activty by dribbling into area.

2. Defender looks to close the space on attacker's first touch.

3. Attacker performs V-L move to go around passive defender.

4. Attacker moves to back of defending line, defender moves to back of attacking line.

5. Next two players repeat process upon making eye contact.

Coaching Points:

1. Head up to observe space.

2. Connect with teammate - eye contact.

3. Quality of approach - Messi touches.

4. Accelerate away - Ronaldo.

5. Execution of moves.

6. Hip and head movement.

Progressions:

1. Ensure players work on both sides.

2. Begin semi-opposed portion with pass from defender.

1v1 Fully Opposed

Organization:

1. 30x20 area with 5x20 endzone.

2. Players set up as shown.

3. Blue gates are 3yds.

4. Plenty of balls.

Instructions:

1. Attacking player (in white) looks to penetrate into endzone before finishing on goal.

2. Defender (in dark blue) looks to win the ball and score by running through either of blue gates.

3. Defender is live upon attacker's first touch; cannot challenge attacker inside endzone.

4. Players go back to same line when done.

5. Rotate roles after two minutes.

Coaching Points:

1. Weight/direction of first touch.

2. Head up to observe space/defender.

3. Pick head up when ball out of feet.

4. Selection and timing of move to beat defender.

5. Execution of move.

Progressions:

1. Start activity with defender passing ball into attacker.

2. Move defender's starting position to front of endzone.

3. Allow defender to challenge inside the endzone.

2. Set up two fields.

3. Goals as shown.

Instructions:

1. Teams play 4v4 with four goals.

2. White/red team defends goals on red line.

3. Blue teams defends goals on blue line.

4. No corners. Can restart with kick-in or dribble in.

Coaching Points:

1. Recognition of space.

2. Recognition of 1v1 and/or numbers overloads.

3. Correct moments to turn or change direction.

4. Speed of play.

Progressions:

1. Move to free play.
