Warm Up - Pass & Move (10 mins)

Organization: Players in teams of 4, passing and moving unopposed in a grid with their team.

Instructions: Unlimited touches, then try to play no more than 3 touches. Mix in dynamic stretching movements. Try to "paint" the whole grid with the ball.

Coaching Points: Movement to support teammate on the ball. Quality of passes, recieving to space, opening to the play. Play to the open areas.

2v2+4 (15 mins)

Organization: Set up as shown in 12x12 grid. Player who passes into target, takes that players spot, while the recieving player dribbles quickly into grid and tries to get the ball to the othe target player either directly or through a combination with his team mate.

Instructions: Keep score and play 2-3 minute rounds. Should be played in a small area to demand quick play and decisions.

Coaching Points: Speed of play. Checking at correct angles. Movement before, during and after the play develops. Quick 1-2 combinations. Play ball to the correct foot. Open body to receive. Think, play, and move the ball quickly. Can enlarge the area if the players do not have success. However...larger area = slower, easier play. Make sure area of play demands improvement of players.

Notes: This activity is extremely high paced. I would recommend playing in round of 3-4 minutes, check scores, and review what worked best, and add in whatever technical/tactical information you want during the break. Keep breaks short and no longer than 90 seconds.

1-2s aren't the only way to combine, praise other options that the players come up with.

Keeping Possession or Starting Over (20 mins)

Organization: Play 4v4 with 4 nuetrals on the outside. Play 4 minute games.

Instructions: Keep ball. 5 passes in the middle = goal. Outside players can be used to retain possession, but if team uses outside player, then their pass count loses 2 passes. Keep score and rotate teams in middle.

Coaching Points: When to risk and when to keep possession. Team that keeps the ball is the only team that can score.

Progression: 2 teams of 6, with target players on opposite ends of grid. If player passes to outside player, he goes out and receiving player enters the play area and play continues.

FC Dallas 4 Corner Game (25 mins)

FC DALLAS VERSION: divide players into 4 teams. 2 teams compete against the other 2. In this case, it is red & blue VS yellow & white. Rule: Player can't pass to his own color. So, in above example - red can only pass to blue, and blue can only pass to red. If they do, ball goes to other team(s).

Organization: Play directional and score by passing ball (1) any corner, (2) any 2 corners, or (3) all corners while retaining possession. Area should be large enough that teams can keep the ball if their technique and decision are correct. Shrink grid to add more pressure.

Coaching Points: Receive back foot to space away from defender. Proper weight and pace of passes. Play the ball away from the defender. Keep the ball moving. Move to support teammates. Call for the ball.

I use FC Dallas versions of games because it forces 1/2 the team to move to help the player on the ball, it is an easy game to coach, because the colors dictate who must be moving to support the player on the ball. This is very easy to see and coach. Players understand that the must always be thinking about who has the ball and who must get the ball.

Don't expect your team to get the movements and play perfect the first time, but after playing 2-3 times players get the necessary movements, and it becomes a natural habit to support the player on the ball.
