To encourage attacking midfielders to support play in the attacking 1/3 by playing off the central striker or by making runs to penetrate the defensive line.

Warm up (5 mins)

ORGANISATION

Set up 3 diamonds 20yds x 10yds

2 groups of 5 oand 1 group of 6 at each diamond


ACTIVITY

Pass from cone 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 1 and follow pass (Box A)

GR Midfield Support (10 mins)

ORGANISATION

16 players, 8 red, 8 blue

Area - 30 x 30yds

Supply of balls around outside of the square.


ACTIVITY

Play 4v4 in the middle with 4 supporting players outside each side of the square so the team in possession has 8 v 4. Players on outside can not enter the square or pass from side to side.

Players on outside have 2 touches and can not challenge each other.

Rotate players outside/inside after 2 mins.


PROGRESSIONS

1. Outside players can not return ball to same player that passed it.

2. Outside players step in with first touch and player who passed it switches places.


COACHING POINTS

Decision making.

Use full area to keep possession.

Creating angles to support play.

Weight of pass.

Awareness/scanniing shoulders.

First touch into space/away from pressure.

CG Midfield Support 4-3-3 (10 mins)

ORGANISATION

16 Players, 8 red, 8 blue (Set up 5 - 3)

Area - 70 x 40 yds with half way line.

Supply of balls in both goals.


ACTIVITY

Team with ball plays 5 - 3 formation and the defending team play Gk - 4 - 3.

Ball must be passed in to attacking half and 2 players can support the strikers to make 5 v 4 + Gk.

As soon as goal is scored or possession lost then supporting players must retreat.


PROGRESSIONS


1. Players can dribble out of own half.

2. Remove zonal restrictions.


COACHING POINTS


Creating angles to support play.

Type/weight of pass.

First touch into space/away from pressure.

Midfielders recognising when to make the run beyond.

When ball into central striker can midfielders get into shooting positions.

One of the supporting midfielders should give depth to the attack.

Communication.

Decision making.

Phase Mid Support 4-3-3 (10 mins)

ORGANISATION

16 players, 8 red (2 - 3 - 3) and 1 yellow goalkeeper with 7 blue (Gk - 4 - 3)

Set up 2nd goal at back of the centre circle.

Supply of balls in 2nd goal.

Have 2 poles indicating middle/final 1/3.


ACTIVITY


Play always starts with the red defensive midfielder passing ball in.

Reds play to main goal and if blue win they score in the goal at centre circle.

Only one attacking defender allowed in to final 1/3.

Free play for a few minutes and then look for coachable moments to demonstrate options and alternatives.

Once both options have been shown, look for one more coachable moment.


OPTION

When ball played to winger, attacking centre midfielder makes run between centre back and full back for the ball to be slid down the outside.


Alternative

IF the full back is able to deny the space in behind THEN the wide midfielder should turn out and drop back to deeper lying midfielder to keep possession.


COACHING POINTS

Quick switch of play to winger.

Striker stays within width of 6 yd box to allow space for midfielder to exploit.

Winger opens body and takes first touch down the line.

Centre midfielder begins run in to space behind full back as winger takes 1st touch.

Centre midfielder should communicate verbally and visually when/where the ball is to be played.

Weight of pass.

Striker movement creates space to near post.

2nd attacking midfielders run to provide option for a cut back.

Opposite winger comes in at back post area.

Defensive midfielder gives depth and an option to keep possession.

OPTION

When ball is played to striker, one or both attacking centre midfielders make diagonal runs to receive lay off and drives in behind for shot.

Alternative

IF defenders have denied the space for penetrating run THEN centre midfielder should look to keep possession and play wide.


COACHING POINTS

Move ball quickly from side to side to pull defending team out of position.

Attacking centre midfielders should split to create width and open up passing opportunities in to striker.

Striker should come short to receive ball and shield it .

Centre midfielders should make run as the ball is on its way to striker and communicate verbally and visually when/where the ball is to be played.

Weight of pass.

Recognise if there is an opportunity to take shot on.

Winger maintaining width to be an option for keeping possession.

Defensive midfielder gives depth and an option to keep possession.

POTENTIAL PROBLEM

Defensive midfielders sitting on top of striker and not pressing the ball.


SOLUTION

Keep possession in middle 1/3, award 1 goal for every 6 passes made in that 1/3.

Award defending team double points for winning ball back in middle 1/3.
