o Poke the ball using the front foot (one closet the ball)

o Lock the ankle

o Weight is on the back foot

o Poke the ball at an angle (diagonal)

o Body weight forward to gain possession

Warm Up (1101) (10 mins)

Organization:

1. 30 x 30 yard area set up as shown

2. 12 players (8 Attackers, 4 Defenders) set up as shown

3. 8 balls (Additional around the outside

Instructions:

1. The defending players attempt to tag the attackers ball with their foot

2. Defenders should not attempt to win the ball only to touch it once

3. On a successful tag defender and attackers change roles

Coaching Points:

1. Close down quickly

2. Angle of approach to make play predictable

3. Slow down as you approach the attacker

4. Bend the knees, stay sideways onto the ball

Progression/Regression:

1. P – Defenders must now win the ball

2. R – Add more defenders to play 6 vs. 6

Main Theme (1118) (20 mins)

Organization:

1. 20 x 10 Yard Area set up as show n

2. 6 players (4 Attackers and 2 Defenders) set up as shown

3. Defender starts with the ball

4. Additional balls by the defender

Instructions:

1. The activity starts with the defender passing the ball into one of the two attackers

2. The defender is permitted to close the attacking player down on their first touch

3. The attacking player must attempt to penetrate the end line

4. After each attempt the attacking players joins the next line and the defender re-starts the activity from the center

5. Points are awarded for a successful dribble or tackle

6. Rotate players after a set time lim it

Coaching Points:

1. Angle and speed of approach.

2. Body Position should be sideways on and low to the ground.

3. Be patient

4. Correct option to block or poke.

Progressions/Regressions:

1. P – Allow 2nd attacker to support the ball from behind.

2. R – Reduce the closing distance for the defender
